FN’s Steve Hilton says VP Harris went from tough on crime to pandering to left-wing extremists

Vice President Kamala Harris is known for pandering to the progressive left’s cries to defund the police. But, her antipathy towards law enforcement is relatively new and may be one reason she is unlikeable and unrelatable to millions of Americans and even some members of the Democratic Party.

Fox News host Steve Hilton suggested Sunday that the vice president’s undergone a transformation of sorts and is now pandering to extremists, effectively doing a 180 on many of her previous stances.

According to a July 2022 survey, 41% of American adults have a “Very Unfavorable” view of Vice President Harris. Some may attribute this to her speaking style and mannerisms, but a recent Fox News report suggests it could be a byproduct of her political pandering and hypocrisy.

During Sunday’s “The Next Revolution,” Hilton described a dinner several years ago during which he found Harris to be “smart, funny” and “super charismatic” and that her recent support for the “defund the police” is antithetical to who she really is and her policy views.  A look back at her history as California’s Attorney General and as a prosecutor in San Francisco reveals why this may be so.

As a prosecutor in San Francisco and California’s Attorney General, she was known for being tough on crime. In San Francisco, she spearheaded an initiative to prosecute parents whose children were truant from school, and in a 2010 “Google Talks” speech, she boasted, “I have raised the conviction rates in my office to the highest they have been in 15 years.”

However, in a 2020 Zoom video, when directly asked, “Where do you stand on defund the police?” she replied, “…we need to reimagine how we are creating safety…”. In only ten years, Harris changed her approach from locking away criminals (including parents whose children were truant from school) to “reimaging safety.” But Harris’s hypocrisy stretches beyond policy ideas and into her actions.

She has repeatedly boasted about “locking up” people for marijuana crimes, but when asked if she had ever smoked marijuana, she glibly laughed in response.

Her alignment with “defund the police” runs contrary to her past, what her actual ideas are, and contrasts with the millions of Americans concerned with increasing crime rates in the US. According to a Gallup study, America’s concern for crime is the highest it has been since 2010. Nonetheless, Harris panders to the progressive left’s defund the police approach to safety. But these policy turnabouts make her unlikeable to American voters and do little to garner support from far-left progressives.

In 2021 New York representative and Squad member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Harris for telling Guatemalan migrants that they could not come to the border.

Vice President Harris’s policy hypocrisies curry her little favor with voters and elected officials. And Hilton finds the negative perception of her is the result of the former California senator not being “true to herself.”

“The real Kamala, the one I met 10 years ago, she’s not some woke, defund-the-police nut job,” the Fox News host contended.

“She is a tough, smart, moderate professional who would actually be a huge improvement on Biden,” he concluded, “if only she would be herself and stop the incessant pandering.”
