Biden’s big ‘re-fund the police’ announcement to save Dems temporarily derailed by Covid

President Joe Biden planned to announce his $37 billion refund-the-police “Safer America Plan” in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, but he had to postpone his remarks as the vaxxed and boosted Democrat tested positive for COVID-19.

Biden was set to travel to Philadelphia after a stop in Wilkes-Barre before continuing on to Delaware but plans changed when it was announced he had tested positive for the virus, CBS News reported.

The president “will participate in his planned meetings at the White House this morning via phone and Zoom from the residence,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, adding that he “will continue to work in isolation until he tests negative.”

Biden expressed “my regrets for missing our event today,” to Pennsylvania Rep. Matt Cartwright, Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti and Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey in a tweet assuring Americans he is “doing great.”

But his planned announcement outlining his $37 billion crime prevention proposal would have to wait.

Republicans have a chance to take back control of the Senate and the House in the 2022 midterms and it is unclear if Biden’s “Safer America Plan” will give the Democrat Party the voter boost they desperately need. But, more importantly, it remains to be seen if the plan will make America’s cities any safer.

Polls show that an increasing number of Americans are concerned with violent crime, so it is no surprise that Biden and Democrats want to increase voter confidence that they are tough on crime. But, a close look at the “Safer America Plan” reveals a soft-on-crime approach that does not “black the blue” as much as the catchy title suggests.

The plan allocates $20 billion of its $37 billion for “ideas for preventing violent crime” and “programs intended to prevent violence,” but only $13 billion for hiring and training 100,000 police officers over the next five years. But, “ideas” and “programs” may be insufficient for stopping the crime wave that has swept the nation.

Over the past few years, America’s left-wing-run major cities, including Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C, have had a surge in violent crimes, most of which can be attributed to progressive ‘defund the police’ efforts and rogue prosecutors failing to bring criminals to justice.

In 2022, Washington, D.C, has experienced a 13% increase in murders, according to the Daily Mail and in Los Angeles, more people were killed by guns during the first six months of 2022 than in any time period in the last 15 years.

The “Safer America Plan” still requires congressional approval.

“Senior administration officials told reporters that Mr. Biden’s remarks were meant to ‘drive a clear contrast with Republicans,’ who are seeking to paint Democrats as being soft-on-crime ahead of November’s midterm elections,” CBS News reported.

However, garnering Democratic support for law enforcement and getting the plan past Congress may prove difficult as many Democrats, including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Cori Bush, D-Mo., are known for their repeated calls to defund the police.

“President Biden’s fiscal year 2023 budget requests a fully paid-for new investment of approximately $35 billion to support law enforcement and crime prevention – in addition to the President’s $2 billion discretionary request for these same programs,” a White House fact sheet read.
