A former Barack Obama campaign manager tore into Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Tuesday, accusing her of “dumb sh*t” actions that could cost the Democrats the House in the 2022 midterm elections.
Jim Messina, who was campaign manager for former President Barack Obama in 2012, is livid that the young Democratic Socialist is backing progressives over incumbents in Democrat primaries.
“This is so counter-productive,” Messina tweeted. “The Supreme Court is about to outlaw abortion. We could lose both houses. So we are going to focus our time running against each other? Now we’re primarying committed progressives because … why? If we lose house it’s because of dumb sh*t like this.”
The verbal flogging of Ocasio-Cortez comes after she threw her support behind New York Democrat Alessandra Biaggi, who is attempting to unseat Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Sean Patrick Maloney.

I’m running for Congress to challenge inaction and political cowardice. New Yorkers deserve fierce champions in Washington, and that’s why I’m so proud to receive the endorsement of one of the bravest fighters I know: @AOC. pic.twitter.com/x7DL4pfNOB

Elections analyst Geoffrey Skelley took issue with Messina’s stance on the subject, asserting that he might not be seeing the bigger picture. He pointed out that Maloney had chosen to run in Congressional District 17 rather than defend his current seat in Congressional District 18.
“This conveniently ignores the fact Maloney opted to run in NY-17 instead of NY-18, which has ~70% of his current constituents, because it’s more competitive, thus big footing a Black Democrat out of NY-17 instead of defending NY-18 as the chair of the DCCC,” Skelley noted.

The New York Times reported on the Maloney mess and Ocasio-Cortez wading into it, noting: “Almost immediately after the new court-approved map was announced last month, Mr. Maloney declared that he would be running not in his current 18th congressional district but the safer 17th district next door. Mr. Maloney lives in that district, but the area is mostly represented by a colleague, Representative Mondaire Jones.”
“Mr. Maloney’s decision to threaten a colleague with a primary drew an outcry from many Democrats, including Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, who called it a ‘conflict of interest’ for the D.C.C.C. chairman, who is responsible for keeping Democrats in the majority in the House and who raises tens of millions of dollars to do so. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said at the time that he should ‘step aside’ from his chairmanship if such a primary occurred,” the leftist media outlet continued.
“You literally went and worked for the British Conservative party against Labour. I never want to be on any team you are on. Judas,” Democratic Socialist @Mike_from_PA tweeted in response to Messina.

Other far-left progressives also attacked Messina over his tweet.
Were you aware that Sean Patrick Maloney switched districts to push out an actually committed progressive?
This couldn’t be more cynical. Go help the Tories again.

Maloney isn’t a progressive, and besides, he’s the one moving into the district.

“Interesting spin of the DCCC chair Maloney absconding his old district after the redraw to primary/push-out Mondaire Jones for the priority of his own political safety over that of the greater majority,” another commenter stated.
“Yea, the Supreme Court is about to outlaw abortion. That’s why we must replace corporate Democrats with progressives who will use their power to EXPAND THE COURT (and abolish the filibuster),” another radical leftist contended. “And if #ExpandTheCourt seems too radical now, just wait until we’ve had a decade of Federalist Society SCOTUS rulings that defy the will of majority. Then, it may well be the moderate option.”
According to Politico, Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-NY) joined Ocasio-Cortez in her criticism of Maloney’s decision as well, saying, “Sean Patrick Maloney did not even give me a heads up before he went on Twitter to make that announcement. And I think that tells you everything you need to know about Sean Patrick Maloney.”
While the process to draw these maps without the legislature is against the will of voters, if the newly-announced maps are finalized, I will run in New York's 17th Congressional District. NY-17 includes my home and many of the Hudson Valley communities I currently represent.
