AOC clashes with fellow Dems over rejection of woke term ‘Latinx’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) went on an Instagram rant Sunday night, chastising those who have an issue with the term “Latinx,” including fellow Democrats who shun it.

She evidently has no patience for anyone who thinks the term is “bad for the party” as well.

Ocasio-Cortez engaged in a discussion concerning the term before embarking on a “mini-rant,” where she laid into unnamed Democrats.

“I also have a mini-rant about this because there are some politicians, including Democratic politicians, that rail against the term ‘Latinx.’ And they’re like, ‘this is so bad, this is so bad for the party,’ like blah blah blah. And it’s almost like it hasn’t struck some of these folks that another person’s identity is not about your reelection prospects,” she caustically charged.

“Latinx” is a gender-neutral term that has come under fire by conservatives and some on the left as well. A poll in December from a Democratic firm found that 30 percent are less likely to cast their vote for a politician who uses the term “Latinx.” It also revealed that only 2 percent of Hispanic respondents actually use the term.

Rep. Ruben Gallego, who is the chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, is one of the most vocal Democratic critics of the term.

He tweeted in December, “To be clear my office is not allowed to use ‘Latinx’ in official communications. When Latino politicos use the term it is largely to appease white rich progressives who think that is the term we use. It is a vicious circle of confirmation bias.”

Ocasio-Cortez asserted that people were creating “drama” over “Latinx” and other “inclusive” woke terminology. She contended that language is “fluid” like gender.

“In the spirit of pride, I wanted to have a note on gender inclusivity in the Spanish language,” she said on Instagram. “People sometimes like to make a lot of drama over the term ‘Latinx.’ But even before ‘Latinx,’ people were trying to do this, like, use an at [@ symbol] to have the ‘A’ and the ‘O’ [in ‘Latino’ and ‘Latina’] together.”

“Gender is fluid, language is fluid, and I think people right now are using the ‘e’ term as gender-neutral in order to be as inclusive as possible. Don’t have to make drama over it,” the progressive socialist Democrat stated.

She asserted that those who have a problem with the term need to rethink their priorities.

“You need to talk about healthcare more, you need to raise people’s wages, you need to talk more about issues that also matter to people,” Ocasio-Cortez lectured her fellow Democrats.

“That being said, if you don’t want to use it, no one’s forcing you to,” Ocasio-Cortez told Democrats while ironically insinuating that if they didn’t they stand a good chance of not being reelected. “But for people who enjoy trying to figure out language and have it meet the modern age, that’s kind of where it’s at.”

Her rant comes just days after fellow New York Democrat Rep. Ritchie Torres slammed the New York Yankees for using the term “Latinx” in a tweet about gun violence.

“I represent the South Bronx, home to the Yankees. Never heard anyone locally use the term ‘Latinx.’ Does a majority of Hispanics actually use the term ‘Latinx’?” Torres asked in a Twitter thread. “If the answer is ‘no’, how did ‘Latinx’ come to be the term to use in government and Corporate America?”

“If you are speaking to a particular person who prefers ‘Latinx,’ then, by all means, use the term,” he later went on to clarify. “But if you are referring to the Hispanic community in general, why not use the term that the majority itself predominantly uses?”

“Every community should have the right to label itself, rather than have a label imposed on them by others,” Torres concluded.
