Harrowing new footage shows paramedics frantically try to save ‘Rust’ cinematographer after being shot by Baldwin

New bodycam footage released by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office on Monday shows the harrowing final moments in which paramedics frantically strove to resuscitate and save the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after she was accidentally shot by Alec Baldwin.

Hutchins, who was 42 at the time of her death, is shown unconscious on the floor of a church in the Bonanza Creek Ranch film set, which is located near the Cerrillos Hills south of Santa Fe, New Mexico. In the footage, the paramedics can be heard crying “Halyna, stay with us!” as they try to revive her; she was shot through her right armpit, the bullet later emerging from the top of her shoulder.

Another video shows the film crew, including Alec Baldwin, asking about Hutchins’ condition.

“What’s her story?” Baldwin can be heard asking, referring to Hutchins, and is told things are “a little bit rougher.” The trove of footage also shows deputies speaking to Baldwin at various points following the tragic shooting. One video shows him being told not to speak to his colleagues about the incident before deputies have a chance to talk to him. Another shows him sitting on the back of a truck, asking about Hutchins’ condition, and being told that EMTs were still trying to revive her.

The final video shows Baldwin’s interrogation at the police station.

In a statement, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza explained that his investigation into the incident is still open, pending the results of an FBI forensic and ballistics analysis, along with DNA and fingerprint studies.

“The sheriff’s office is releasing all files associated with our ongoing investigation,” Mendoza said in the statement, which explains the recent release of examination reports and photo documentation of ammunition on the set.

While filming on October 21, 2021, Alec Baldwin was reportedly pointing his gun in the direction of the film’s director, Joel Souza, and Halyna Hutchins when it discharged, killing Hutchins and wounding Souza. The video of Baldwin’s interrogation shows the actor’s reaction to what happened that fateful day.

At first, he asks if he is being charged with anything.

“We’ve done this for two weeks and we’ve done it the right way every day,” he says. Then he explains that the gun was “cold” when the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, handed it to him.

“She disarmed me—Hannah—she always handled the gun,” he explains. “I come back, they hand me the revolver—Hannah—they arm me. You’re assuming it’s a cold gun. I put the gag in the shot. I take the gun out, as it clears—I turn and cock the gun and the gun goes off. It’s supposed to be a cold gun.

“Bang, she hits the ground. [Joel Souza] goes down, screaming, going ‘Jesus Christ!’ I have never seen this before…What came out of that bullet that went through her shoulder?…She was right in front of me.”

Near the end of his grilling, investigators show the actor a photo of the bullet removed from Souza’s shoulder.

“That’s a bullet!” Baldwin exclaims, shocked. “Somebody put a live bullet in the gun.”

“Did you see the rounds in the gun?” the investigator asks.

“No,” Baldwin replies.

“Have you seen what they look like?”

“I’ve watched [Hannah] load and reload the gun many times,” he says.

“Have you seen the bullets?”

“Sometimes the head is a casing, it’s pinched and closed at the top and you put the cosmetic round in when you know you’re going to see…those clay-based rounds look exactly like a bullet. So cosmetically you see that in the cylinder. I am very upset right now…forgive me.”

The film was allegedly plagued with gun safety complaints by crew members that went unheeded. The Occupational Health and Safety Bureau of the State of New Mexico has sanctioned the film’s production company with a fine of $136,793, which is so far the only punitive action assessed in Hutchins’ tragic death.
