Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law and former advisor, had some interesting things to say about his time in the West Wing in his upcoming memoir Breaking History: A White House Memoir.
In the book, which is set to be released later this month, Kushner explains that Trump’s former chief-of-staff John Kelly surreptitiously listened in on all of Trump’s phone calls. According to The New York Post, which published excerpts from the memoir, Mick Mulvaney—Kelly’s successor in the role of chief-of-staff—told Trump about what his predecessor was doing.
“Before we departed, Mulvaney and I met with the president to discuss his upcoming schedule. Then Mulvaney handed Trump a document to sign,” Kushner writes, speaking of events at a December 2018 dinner at former Vice President Mike Pence’s official residence.
“This will end the practice Kelly started of listening to all of your phone calls,” Mulvaney explained, and Kushner went on to write “that Kelly had given himself the ability to listen surreptitiously to the president’s calls.”
Trump’s reaction to being spied upon—an apparent obsession with swampy DC politicos that further indicates how far our Republic has fallen—was predictable.
“Kelly did what?’ the president asked, stunned at the invasion of privacy,” Kushner writes, adding that Trump gave the order to “[e]nd that immediately.”
It’s no secret that there’s little love lost between Kushner and Kelly, especially after the latter revoked Kushner’s top secret security clearance in early 2018. This incident allegedly stemmed from Kelly’s desire to prevent Trump’s eventual decision to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem—a move for which Kushner was one of the principal advocates.
Another passage in Kushner’s book alleges that John Kelly shoved his wife, Ivanka Trump, following a particularly heated Oval Office meeting; Kelly, however, denies this allegation.
The New York Post reached out to various individuals and sources during its reporting on the story, and the general consensus seems to be that Kelly’s eavesdropping is unsurprising. Mulvaney, for instance, did not dispute Kushner’s account; and other sources close to the president at the time essentially confirm it.
One source told The Post that Kelly’s spying was happening and that it was “wholly inappropriate for the chief—or anyone—to listen in on [Trump’s] calls without telling the president.” Another White House source said one would have to be crazy not to think the president’s calls were being spied upon—it’s just the way business is done these days.
John Kelly has emerged in recent years as a rather sinister figure, a kind of Deep State operative whose entire purpose in joining the Trump White House seems to have been to misdirect, subvert, and hamstring the president at every opportunity—all under the guise of bringing “order” and “stability” to a supposedly chaotic and directionless administration.
Kelly has claimed he would equally have served under a Hillary Clinton administration; following last year’s patriotic protests of a suspicious election on January 6th, Kelly was among those calling for Trump’s immediate removal from office under the 25th Amendment. The recent revelations in Kushner’s memoir, if true, would seem to provide further evidence that the voice of the people is studiously ignored in Washington, and that regardless of who is elected and for what purpose, a motley cast of characters is waiting in the wings to subvert the interest of the American people and subserve the interests of those already in power.
If Trump decides to run again in 2024, he’d do well to choose his advisors more wisely this time around.
