Top Dem James Clyburn has been showering his family with loads of campaign cash: report

Prominent South Carolina Democrat James Clyburn, who also happens to be the House Majority Whip, distributed over $200,000 in largesse to family members, according to a new report.

Rep. Clyburn is one of the leading Democrats in Washington and his influence and clout in that town are significant. In 2020, Clyburn threw his weight behind the faltering Biden campaign, and it’s widely believed that Clyburn’s support is what turned things around for the current occupant of the White House by securing Biden’s win in the South Carolina primary.

Clyburn entered Congress in 1993 and has faced no real challenge to his long reign as Representative of South Carolina’s 6th Congressional District. And the recent Fox News Digital report on Clyburn’s payouts to family members illustrate just how lucrative a congressional seat can be for those who serve the longest.

In recent years, Clyburn has reportedly managed to funnel campaign expenditures to five different family members, which include two of his daughters, along with their husbands and even a grandson. For example, his daughter, Jennifer Clyburn Reed managed to take home a cool $45,000 in the second half of 2020, in what was described as a “campaign management fee.” She’s also pocketed tens of thousands in “office rent” which was paid to an LLC she owns rather than directly to her.

Furthermore, between March of 2020 and November of last year, federal records indicate that Clyburn’s campaign has shelled out north of $50,000 in payments for “office rent” and “office supplies” to a company known as “49 Magnolia Blossom, LLC.” South Carolina business records show that the registered agent for this company is Walter A. Reed, Jennifer Clyburn Reed’s husband.

So it’s probably no coincidence that the company’s registered address happens to be the same as Jennifer and Walter Reed’s former home. Other payments to the LLC by Clyburn’s campaign include a $650 payment for “office maintenance lighting” and a rental payment for $7,500.

But the Reeds aren’t the only members of Clyburn’s family to benefit. Records show that another daughter, Angela Hannibal, amassed a small fortune of $20,000 in exchange for “canvassing and voter outreach,” “truck rental,” “catering,” and “event coordination” between April 2018 and October 2019. But it was Angela’s husband, Cecil Hannibal, who really made it big, pocketing $70,000 from 2010 to 2012.

The final beneficiary of Clyburn’s largesse is his grandson, Walter A. C. Reed, who received thousands of dollars each month for what’s described as a “campaign management fee.” These payments date back to October and already total $35,000.

There’s nothing illegal about this kind of blatant nepotism, and it’s certainly common enough among both Democrats and Republicans. It’s just another one of the more charming features of the DC Swamp; nevertheless, the practice is generally frowned upon for ethical reasons. However, the ones doing all the frowning are on the outside—while DC insiders and their relatives are making a killing.

And James Clyburn isn’t the only one. Fox News reported that Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) has paid well over a million dollars to her daughter for vague “campaign managing services,” and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has funneled almost $3 million into the coffers of husband Tim Mynett’s E Street Group consulting firm.
