Smuggler with 76 illegals in truck busted on Texas side of border

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) busted a Honduran national suspected of smuggling 76 illegal immigrants in the back of a truck Thursday, just one day prior to the announced suspension of Title 42 which is set to devastate the capabilities of the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

DPS pulled over the vehicle in Dimmit County, TX which slightly abuts the U.S.-Mexico border and resides just north of Webb County where Laredo is and to the southwest of San Antonio. The trailer had been utilizing a blue tarp as a makeshift roof to conceal the 76 illegals being smuggled for whom the countries of origin have not been yet disclosed, Fox News reported.

According to Texas DPS, the driver, who was also illegally in the country, is a Honduran national with a “previous criminal history of drug and weapons charges.” He was found to be in the possession of meth at the time of his arrest for human smuggling.

All of the migrants who were apprehended were placed in the custody of CBP for processing as the agency braces for “as many as 500,000 migrants in the six weeks” leading up to the end of Title 42 scheduled for May 23.

“We are expecting to get wrecked,” an agent for CBP told Fox News Digital.

Title 42 had been implemented by President Donald Trump’s administration in March 2020 and allowed for expedited expulsion of migrants and barring application for asylum on a discretionary basis to quell the further spread of COVID at the onset of the pandemic.

This measure had permitted more than half of the 164,000 migrants encountered in February alone to be expelled from the United States. The decision by President Joe Biden’s administration appears to be guided by politics rather than sound policy.

The directive to suspend Title 42 came from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) rather than CBP and, as reported, has left the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) focused on fulfilling Biden’s promise to get the migrants COVID vaccines rather than stop them from entering the country illegally.

In fact, they are floating the idea of taking medical personnel away from the Department of Veterans Affairs in order to meet these demands as reported by Fox News correspondent Hillary Vaughn.

Having remained exceedingly reluctant to end mandates that had devastated the lives and freedoms of Americans throughout the pandemic, even Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin (WV) is pointing out the absurdity of ending these protections without comprehensive immigration reform to secure the border and provide a path for citizenship to those who actually qualify.

“With encounters along our southern border surging and the highly-transmissible Omicron BA.2 subvariant emerging as the dominant [sic] strain in the United States, now is not the time to throw caution to the wind,” Manchin wrote to CDC Director Rochelle Walensky.

These sentiments were shared by Democratic Sens. Maggie Hassan (NH)  and Mark Kelley (AZ) who consider it “premature” and “unacceptable.”

Only progressives who want open borders like Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) seemed in favor of the move, calling it “the product of years of advocacy…ending this extremely harmful, xenophobic, and shortsighted policy that disproportionately impacted Black and Brown migrants.”

Border Patrol is anticipating as many as 4 million encounters with illegal immigrants in 2022, more than double the 1.734 million from 2021.
