Divisions on the left continued to grow Saturday when the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) released a statement blaming the United States and NATO for the invasion of Ukraine.

The organization which touts their aim, in part, to be “to collectively own the key economic drivers that dominate our lives, such as energy production and transportation,” claimed that it was their “duty” to oppose the “new world” order allied forces were attempting to impose.

Taking a break from promoting pet projects like the Green New Deal supported by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT), both Congressional members of the organization, the DSA issued a statement in stark contrast to earlier silences.

When Venezuelans were in the throes of an uprising against socialist dictator Nicholas Maduro, there was no comment from Ocasio-Cortez on whether or not she supported the regime that kept the workers oppressed. Likewise, as Cuba’s communist regime cracked down on protesters, no statements were issued by the offices of Sanders or AOC to stop “militarism.” But the DSA saw fit now to draw a line between themselves and the rest of the Democrat Party.

Condemning “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine” with demands for “immediate diplomacy and de-escalation to resolve” the crisis, the DSA reaffirmed their “solidarity” with the working class of both Ukraine and Russia along with the antiwar protestors before laying the blame for the invasion squarely on the U.S. and NATO.

Though they acknowledged the “extreme and asymmetrical escalation” by Russia was “an illegal act under the United Nations Charter,” the DSA demanded the U.S. “withdraw from NATO” and “end the imperialist expansionism that set the stage for this conflict.”

“While the failures of neoliberal order are clear to everyone,” the statement concluded, “the ruling class is trying to build a new world, through a dystopic transition grounded in militarism, imperialism, and war. Socialists have a duty to build an alternative. No war but class war.”

The release of the statement comes on the heels of last week’s announcement that Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) would be speaking on behalf of the Working Families Party in giving an official rebuttal to President Joe Biden’s first State of the Union address, which was likened to “sacking your own quarterback” by “Real Time” host Bill Maher. The DSA has provided another example of Democrat infighting that, as Maher put it, pits “us versus them” within their own ranks.

Maher was proven correct on this matter when several Democrats voiced their opposition to the DSA’s statement, including former Congressman Max Rose (D-NY) who is once again seeking elected office.

The sentiment was echoed by Tom Suozzi, another NY Democrat who is seeking to unseat incumbent Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) in this year’s gubernatorial race.

More prominently, the statement from the DSA goes in direct opposition to Biden who has said all along that his primary goal has been to protect the NATO alliance and that that was the key to stopping Putin.

“…and my goal from the very beginning,” Biden said, “was to make sure that I kept all of NATO…on the same page because the one thing that Putin thought he could do was to split NATO…” and “…there’s been complete unanimity and Russia will pay a serious price for this short term and long term.”
