Democratic Socialists ignore Cuba’s crackdown on protesters demanding freedom from communism

As thousands of protesters take to the streets in Cuba demonstrating against the evil communist regime that has had them in a stranglehold for more than 60 years, Democratic Socialists such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders are totally ignoring them.

Protests erupted on Sunday in cities across Cuba and there was not a peep from Democratic Socialists in America acknowledging the historic occurrence just 90 miles from Florida.

Fox News reportedly emailed Sanders and Reps. Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rashida Tlaib. None of them responded and they haven’t even mentioned the massive protests on social media.

As Cubans are demonstrating against horrific food shortages, skyrocketing prices, and the pandemic, the left is eerily silent. The only thing that they reacted with was to call on President Biden to lift the U.S. embargo and sanctions on Cuba which will not resolve their problems.

Demonstrators chanted in the streets, “Enough!,” “Freedom!” and “Unite!” American flags were being flown and displayed during the protests.

The Biden administration was slammed on social media for basically doing nothing as the protests played out in the streets of Cuba.

By contrast, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), who is the daughter of a Cuban immigrant, reacted strongly on Monday to the massive protests. “What people need to understand is that people in Cuba right now, they are starving, they don’t have food, and they have very difficult conditions,” she stated Monday on ‘America’s Newsroom.’

“If you noticed yesterday they were marching with the American flag and I think that’s a reminder to Americans here how lucky and fortunate we are to be in this country—where we do have freedom, where we are a democracy, we elect our representatives, and we have liberties that people dream about in other countries. And that should be a reminder—particularly to those Americans here who lack appreciation—some of the athletes that turn their backs to the American flag. Look how much we’re loved and want to be emulated with freedom in other parts of the world,” she added.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) blasted the State Department for claiming that the protests were about COVID-19 and not about freedom and Cuba’s worsening economic situation. Protesters chanting, “We want liberty!” should have put that claim to rest.

“People in Cuba are protesting 62 years of socialism, lies, tyranny & misery not ‘expressing concern about rising COVID-19 cases/deaths. Why is it so hard for @Potus & the people in his administration to say that?” Rubio tweeted.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, who now heads the Communist Party, is urging the country’s revolutionaries to counter the demonstrators.

“We are prepared to do anything,” he vowed during a national address. “We will be battling in the streets.”

He added, “We are calling on all the revolutionaries in the country, all the Communists, to hit the streets wherever there is an effort to produce these provocations.”

Former President Trump is a strong supporter of freedom for Cubans from the communist dictatorship that rules the country. He imposed tough sanctions and travel restrictions to put pressure on the regime. Now, the left wants to undo all that using the protests as an excuse when the two have nothing to do with one another.

Democratic Socialists have never denounced Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro either. In fact, they have done just the opposite. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) in 2019 accused the U.S. government of leading a coup against Maduro.

Sanders has strongly defended communist dictator Fidel Castro when he was in power. The Vermont senator justified it by telling Anderson Cooper during an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes” that Cubans did not rise up against Castro because he “educated their kids, gave their kids health care, totally transformed the society.”

“We’re very very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba but you know, it’s unfair to simply say everything is bad,” Sanders contended. “You know? When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing? Even though Fidel Castro did it?”

Conservatives are adamantly supporting the protesters in Cuba. Sen. Ted Cruz, whose father is a Cuban immigrant, made it clear on Twitter Sunday where his support lies.

“It has brutalized & denied freedom to generations of Cubans, and forced my family & so many others to flee,” he tweeted. “The American people stand squarely with the men & women of Cuba and their noble fight for liberty.”

And Cruz had a lot more to say:

Meghan McCain also spoke up for Cuba and against Democrats for using “dangerous” and “stupid” dialogue concerning socialism.

“I honestly see this as political in our country as well,” the co-host of “The View” stated. “When you have people like Bernie Sanders who have praised Fidel Castro and said that it was ‘unfair to condemn a communist regime,’ I will be interested to see what the reaction will be like in this country.”
