Just hours after CNN host Chris Cuomo was “indefinitely suspended” over unethical journalistic dealings concerning his brother, his colleague Brian Stelter asserted that Cuomo could return to the network sometime after Christmas in just a few weeks.
Stelter said on “New Day” Monday that while Cuomo is currently benched, “We’re heading into a holiday season. I think it’s possible he will be on the bench for several weeks. It’s possible he’ll be back in January.”
The “Cuomo Prime Time” host found himself fighting for his career this week after newly released documents revealed he was deeply involved in helping his brother, disgraced former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, during the pandemic and amid allegations of sexual misconduct. He was evidently much more involved than he had previously disclosed to his viewers and CNN.
According to transcripts, Chris Cuomo was reaching out to media sources to find out who was coming forward against his brother. He had also allegedly texted journalists asking them about stories that could potentially make his brother look bad and then sent that information to the governor’s aides.

Chris Cuomo was suspended from the network “indefinitely, pending further evaluation” of the documents. At first, many believed he would skate, just as legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin did at CNN after his masturbation scandal. Then suddenly, Cuomo was suspended supposedly after the breach of journalism ethics became too much for CNN to tolerate.
Oliver Darcy, who co-authors CNN’s “Reliable Sources” with Brian Stelter, wrote a segment in the show’s newsletter on Tuesday that garnered immediate attention and perked up more than a few ears.
“Cuomo has been suspended by CNN – not for a few days, not for some faux ‘vacation,’ but for an indefinite period of time, ‘pending further evaluation,’ the network said,” Darcy stated. “The CNN spokesman who shared the suspension decision did not get into any further details, but it’s possible that Cuomo – who frequently ranks as the highest-rated host on the network — will remain on the bench for weeks.”

That statement indicates that Cuomo will potentially be kept out of sight just long enough by CNN for things to die down a bit before bringing him back. In essence, he would get a prolonged Christmas vacation.
“The suspension is indefinite. There is no end date. It will remain that way until after a review,” a CNN spokesperson told Fox News Digital when asked if the newsletter indicated that Cuomo would be back. “The statement couldn’t be any more clear.”
CNN’s initial statement announced the fall of Cuomo: “The New York Attorney General’s office released transcripts and exhibits Monday that shed new light on Chris Cuomo’s involvement in his brother’s defense. The documents, which we were not privy to before their public release, raise serious questions. When Chris admitted to us that he had offered advice to his brother’s staff, he broke our rules and we acknowledged that publicly. But we also appreciated the unique position he was in and understood his need to put family first and job second. However, these documents point to a greater level of involvement in his brother’s efforts than we previously knew. As a result, we have suspended Chris indefinitely, pending further evaluation.”

One of Andrew Cuomo’s accusers also came forward on Monday and excoriated Stelter for helping “abuses of power” by defending Chris Cuomo.

Stelter was put on the hot seat earlier this year by “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert. He pointed out Chris Cuomo’s “odd conflict” of interest.
“It is an odd conflict,” Stelter acknowledged at the time, according to Fox News. “But I don’t think — if we open up the journalism ethics book, there’s no page for this. The craziest set of circumstances that you can imagine, right? A governor and a brother, both in these high-profile jobs. This is definitely awkward for CNN, though.”
Stelter would go on to laughingly claim that Cuomo abides by journalistic boundaries after Colbert insinuated he doesn’t. That claim is coming back to haunt him.
