U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced a bill on Tuesday that would award the Congressional Gold Medal to Kyle Rittenhouse, the highest honor the legislative branch can bestow on an individual.
Recent recipients of the medal include law enforcement officers who responded on Jan. 6 and the 13 service members who were killed in a terrorist attack in Afghanistan. The Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, George Washington, Winston Churchill, Bob Hope, golfer Jack Nicklaus, astronaut Neil Armstrong, the Tuskegee Airmen, Rosa Parks, Pope John Paul II, baseball player Jackie Robinson, and Martin Luther King Jr. have also received the award.
Rittenhouse was acquitted on all charges including homicide, attempted homicide, and reckless endangerment after shooting and killing two attackers and wounding a third in self-defense during the Black Lives Matter protest and riot in Kenosha, Wisconsin in the summer of 2020. The protest occurred after police shot Jacob Blake, who was wanted on a felony warrant and was left paralyzed after the incident.
The bill would honor Rittenhouse for protecting the “community of Kenosha, Wisconsin, during a Black Lives Matter (BLM) riot,” the Washington Post reported.
The legislation is highly unlikely to succeed because Democrats currently control both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The bill would have to be co-sponsored by two-thirds of both chambers. As of Friday, there are no co-sponsors for the bill.
If it is co-sponsored, the bill would then be considered by the House Financial Services Committee and the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs before being authorized by the president.
Democrats overwhelmingly stood against Rittenhouse during his trial while Republicans were primarily in his corner.
Following the not guilty verdict, Greene expressed the desire to have Rittenhouse intern for her office. Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Matt Gaetz (R-FL) also said they would like to have him intern for them. Rittenhouse also met with former President Trump at Mar-a-Lago earlier in the week.
Greene tweeted a picture of Trump and Rittenhouse and called them “Two men I greatly admire.”
“Two men I greatly admire along with a mother who has had to endure more than she ever thought she could. Kyle thanks Pres Trump for two most important things the left is trying to destroy. We must always uphold our Constitution, defend our 2A, & stop our enemies who hate them,” the Georgia congresswoman wrote.

Greene also defended Rittenhouse during his trial, tweeting that he was “more of a man” than those attacking him on social media following his emotional testimony and cheered his acquittal on Twitter, claiming he was “one of the good ones.”

“We are concerned that awarding Kyle with a Congressional Gold Medal will give him a big head during the internship with our office,” Joel Valdez, a Gaetz spokesman, told the Washington Post.
The medal is bestowed on people deserving of the “highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions by individuals or institutions” and has been awarded since the American Revolution.
