U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) has formally recommended disciplinary action be taken against six of its officers following an investigation into their conduct during the January 6th capitol riot.
The USCP released a statement on Saturday, after 38 internal investigations were opened in relation to an overall misconduct audit by the USCP’s Office of Professional Responsibility. Of those 38, the probe was able to identify and investigate 26 of the officers involved in potential cases, and then further narrowed down six officers for formal disciplinary action. However, while disciplinary action has been recommended, the U.S. Attorney’s Office was unable to find sufficient evidence that the misconduct strayed into criminal conduct warranting arrest and prosecution at trial.
A breakdown of the violations were as follows: three for “conduct unbecoming [of a USCP officer],” one for failure to comply with directives, one for improper remarks, and one for improper dissemination of information. The USCP stated that one case involving an officer accused of “unsatisfactory performance” and “conduct unbecoming” is still ongoing.
The statement also praised the efforts of other officers during the riot, of which there were more than 1,200 involved:
“The six sustained cases should not diminish the heroic efforts of the United States Capitol Police officers. On January 6, the bravery and courage exhibited by the vast majority of our employees was inspiring.”
The timing of the statement drew some criticism, due to being released after 5 PM (EST) on the 9/11 anniversary:
On a Saturday night, the 20th anniversary of 9/11? Why did you choose to release this tonight? 🤨

The riots of January 6th continue to raise bitter controversy, with the left saying that such actions constituted a full-blown attempt at a coup by outgoing President Trump’s supporters. U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) claims she was afraid of being raped, which in turn inspired mockery from commentators on the right, such as Tucker Carlson, considering the lawmaker wasn’t in the Capitol at the time.
Conspiracy theories on both the left and the right continue to abound, as each side tries to politically harness the riot and control the narrative. Even the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon got involved in the political rhetoric, blaming “white rage” for the riots, among other things.
A bipartisan Senate report was more politically restrained, and reserved most blame for various federal intelligence and law enforcement agencies. The report castigated what it found to be “a number of intelligence and security failures leading up to and on January 6 that allowed for the breach of the Capitol.”
There have been over 570 people arrested and charged for various crimes relating to the January 6th riot. The clash turned fatal, and 5 people died over the course of the riot from various causes, both among the rioters and police — Officer Brian Sicknick died the following day after having two strokes, with the D.C. chief medical examiner stating that his death was from “natural causes.” Further attention was drawn when four officers involved subsequently died by suicide.
