Lawmakers and pundits railed at chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Army Gen. Mark Milley, during and after testimony on Capitol Hill Wednesday over his support for including or recommending divisive, anti-capitalist materials in military training doctrines such as critical race theory and authoritarian political ideologies.
During her Fox News program Wednesday evening, an exasperated Laura Ingraham noted that America’s adversaries, especially China, are watching with heightened attentiveness as military leaders and the Biden administration appear to be shifting their focus to alleged domestic threats rather than threats to U.S. national security interests abroad.
She played a clip of Milley giving testimony earlier in the day to the House Armed Services Committee, in which he addressed critical race theory in the context of “white rage” he said was responsible for the Jan. 6 protest at the U.S. Capitol Building.
In addition, Milley admitted that he has read the works of authoritarian anti-capitalists including Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, and Mao Zedong, the latter of whom were both communist revolutionaries who brought the ideology to the Soviet Union and modern-day China, respectively.

“First of all, on the issue of critical race theory…I do think it’s important, actually, for those of us in uniform to be open-minded and be widely read,” Milley said. “I wanna understand white rage. And I’m white. And I wanna understand it.
“It’s important that we understand it because our [personnel], they come from the American people. It matters to our military and to the discipline and cohesion of this military,” the four-star general continued.
“Let’s poll the active duty servicemen and women on that, sir,” Ingraham quipped in response to Milley’s statement.
Later in the program, as Ingraham brought in Florida GOP Reps. Byron Donalds and Michael Waltz, the latter of whom is a former Green Beret and a currently serving Army National Guard officer, to discuss Milley’s comments, she played another clip of Milley appearing to lecture lawmakers who continued to press about the inclusion of divisive materials such as CRT in military training.
“What is wrong with understanding, having some situational understanding about the country for which we are here to defend? And I personally find it offensive that we are accusing the United States military — our general officers, our commissioned, non-commissioned officers — of being, quote, woke, or something else because we’re studying some theories that are out there,” Milley said.
Ingraham accused Milley of being “a total partisan at this point,” noting that he appeared to be “parroting left-wing talking points” about teaching CRT.
Waltz responded by saying he believes that Milley is “confusing critical race theory for some type of diversity training or a history class on fascism and communism.” He went on to say that CRT, by comparison, teaches troops to “resist” the country’s “basic institutions” and “our Constitution,” which is ultimately self-destructive, and that “at its core” the U.S. is “racist, misogynist, colonialist, and therefore needs to be pushed back against.”
But Ingraham disagreed with Waltz’s fundamental point that Milley is simply unaware of what he’s referencing.
“You’re giving him a lot more credit than I am,” she responded. “I think he knows exactly what is going on.
“I mean, I respect his service, just like you, but I do not respect what went down in his hearing today,” she continued. “The idea that we are sending out tax dollars to this military in an attempt to weed out so-called extremists, which just means conservative evangelicals as far as I can tell.”
“We’re paying for that?” Ingraham continued, growing increasingly angry.
“Why is Congress not saying we’re not going to give you a penny until all of this is eradicated from the military budget? Nothing,” Ingraham continued. “This is my offer to you: nothing. That’s what I would say. I am totally outraged by [Milley] and his ridiculous response today.”
Donalds, who is black, called it “ridiculous” that white troops should have to atone for their immutable “whiteness.”
“That is ridiculous, that is a joke,” he said.
“If you want to study the history of the nation, study the history of the nation. But let’s be very clear, critical race theory is a subjective lens to view the history of the country, not an objective study of the history of the United States,” Donalds continued.
“CRT is going to split our military ranks like it splits our young children in schools. It has no place there, it has no place in K-12 education, and the United States government should not be funding that. If academics want to theorize in the halls of academia, it’s a free country, God bless you, go do it, but we shouldn’t be funding it in our military in our schools,” he added.
