Number of migrants apprehended at US border reportedly hits alarming twenty year-year high

The number of migrant apprehensions at the nation’s southern border in the month of July eclipsed 200,000, reaching a 20 year high while the year-to-date number has risen to over one million, as the crisis on the border continues to rage on.

While the official numbers have not yet been released, U.S. authorities stopped approximately 210,000 migrants at the border in July, David Shahoulian, assistant secretary for border and immigration policy at the Department of Homeland Security told the Associated Press, and the numbers are usually close to accurate.

The whopping figure has drastically increased from both the same time last year when there were over 40,000 apprehensions and from 81,000 in July 2019. The apprehension number is up from June 2021’s total of 188,829 according to Customs and Border Protection.

Shahoulian estimates that authorities picked up 19,000 unaccompanied minors at the border in July, topping the previous high of 18,877 in March and up significantly from June’s 15,253 figure.

The number of families encountered in July is expected to sit at 80,000, up from 55,805 in June but lower than the all-time high of 88,857 in May 2019.

Officials emphasize that the numbers should not be directly compared because many of them overlap due to a pandemic-related ban that removes illegal aliens from the country without giving them the opportunity to seek asylum.

The official numbers are expected to be released by CBP in a few days, and should these estimates prove accurate, the Biden administration will face scrutiny for their rollback of tough, Trump-era border policies in favor of open border policies.

“It signifies Biden administration strategy simply not working. These numbers are astronomically high, it’s absurd. Anyone who brushes that off doesn’t understand what’s actually going on at the border,” Chad Wolf, former Acting DHS Secretary under the Trump administration and visiting fellow at The Heritage Foundation told DailyMail.

President Biden appointed his Vice President, Kamala Harris as border czar to remediate the crisis. Harris has been widely criticized for her lack of response as the crisis continues to worsen. It took her 94 days to make a trip to the border, and her visit itself was described as a “parachuting visit” to El Paso, a region not seeing the impact of the crisis like other more vulnerable areas.

Just last week, Harris unveiled the administration’s plan to address the “root causes”– her favorite part of the immigration crisis– which “identifies, prioritizes and coordinates actions to improve security, governance, human rights, and economic conditions in the region,” according to the official plan.

Border apprehension numbers typically drop off in July according to Wolf, who told the DailyMail that this surge could indicate even higher August numbers.

On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control extended Title 42, an order that limits entry for illegal migrants due to the coronavirus. Liberal activists have called on the Biden administration to suspend the order, which expels about 100,000 adults each month according to the DailyMail.

Democrats, however, don’t seem enthused to address root causes. Instead, they are considering a measure to grant illegal aliens amnesty through their $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill. The radical move would only encourage more immigrants to illegally cross the border.

Conservatives are outraged at the possibility which could lead to fewer jobs for true American citizens and pose a safety threat to families and communities thanks to the gang violence, drug and sex trafficking commonly brought over the border by illegal, criminal migrants.
