Dave Portnoy let loose on the editors of a slick-cover Nantucket magazine after they apologized for featuring the Barstool Sports founder on the May cover.
The apology last week came after the small offices of N Magazine, a glossy pub in the well-to-do island off of Massachusetts, were reportedly inundated with complaints from residents, women’s shelters and women’s groups.
“Since releasing our May issue a week ago, we have heard from various members of our community who vehemently object to our current cover featuring Dave Portnoy,” the magazine’s publisher, Bruce A. Percelay, and editor, Robert Cocuzzo, noted on Facebook.
“While the story was intended to highlight Mr. Portnoy’s work in support of small businesses, a number of people in the community have taken issue with offensive remarks and actions he has made in the past,” they continued. “We never want to hurt, offend or disappoint any of our readers with the stories we publish. Accordingly, we formally apologize for any pain caused to those who have objected to this May cover.”
In December, Portnoy launched the “Barstool Fund” to help provide financial relief to small businesses wracked by losses due to prolonged COVID-related shutdowns after calling the government-imposed mandates “the greatest crime of the 21st century.” The fund has raised more than $35 million.
Portnoy owns a $2 million home on Nantucket.
“In the case of Mr. Portnoy…who has been previously profiled extensively by other publications on the island and has collaborated with a number of Nantucket businesses, we felt his recent fundraising for small businesses was timely news,” Percelay and Cocuzzo added in their Facebook post. “We now recognize and acknowledge our oversight in how this story would be received. We appreciate feedback, positive or otherwise, because ultimately it helps make us a better publication going forward.”
Portnoy, in pushing back, did not mince words. “Everybody who doesn’t like me can go f**k themselves,” he told Page Six. “If you took a poll on Nantucket of people who like me and hate me, I’d bet 99 percent like me.”
“It’s unfortunate that the powers that be at N Magazine are spineless jellyfish who are held hostage by the whims of the vocal minority,” he continued. “Meanwhile, I will continue to do my best to make Nantucket and America a better place while those who hate me can continue to throw cry parties for themselves about how I made a joke they didn’t like 20 years ago.”
In the past, Portnoy has been savaged for using what his critics called racist, misogynistic, and sexist language. And most recently, he was criticized again after a video of him having rough, but consensual, sex with partner and Instagram model Sydney Raines was posted online.
“I became aware yesterday that a video has surfaced on the internet and yes, that was me,” Raines said in response. “Its [sic] hard to believe that a video from the past is just coming to light but it was never meant to be public.”
“Some might not approve of the video content but it was entirely consensual and it’s unfortunate that it is no longer private,” Raines continued on Instagram, adding, “but we are still friends with no animosity between us.”
Portnoy, however, was much more animated and graphic in his response, angrily reacting to a precipitous drop in stock of the company that partially owns Barstool Sports, Penn National Gaming, after the video was leaked.
“A stock is down because somebody has consensual sex? Are you f**king kidding me?” he said in a fiery video.
“Somebody committing a crime by leaking an old video of sex between two consenting adults seems like a dumb reason for a stock to go down,” he added. “As far as I know, nobody would exist on Earth without intercourse. And anybody who shared or watched it committed a federal crime. It was never meant for public consumption. Either way, it presented a good buying opportunity in my mind.”
