Sharon Osbourne throws down with co-host to defend Piers Morgan against alleged racism: ‘Educate me!’

Former reality TV star Sharon Osbourne got into an emotional and heated discussion with co-host Sheryl Underwood on Wednesday’s segment of CBS’ “The Talk” while discussing her friend Piers Morgan and the Meghan Markle mess that resulted in him leaving “Good Morning Britain.”

Osbourne tearfully stated that she had been accused of being a racist herself because she stood by Morgan in his hour of need following comments he made about Markle after her interview with Oprah Winfrey. Markle trashed the Royal Family and Morgan, who is a reported royalist, took exception to it.

“I know he has a right to say what he feels on the interview, as we have a right to say and everybody has a right to say what they feel with freedom of speech,” she said. “Did I like everything he said? Did I agree with what he said? No, because it’s his opinion. It’s not my opinion. …I support him for his freedom of speech, and he’s my friend.”

Osbourne went on: “But why is it that because I supported a long-time friend and work colleague of mine for years that everybody goes, if you support him, then you must be racist because he’s racist?”

Osbourne felt the need to defend herself because of her friendship with Morgan: “I’m not racist…I don’t care what color or what religion anyone is. Are you a nice person? That’s what I judge you on.”

Osbourne’s friend and co-host Sheryl Underwood put her on the spot: “What would you say to people who may feel that while you’re standing by your friend, it appears you gave validation or safe haven to something that he has uttered that is racist, even if you don’t agree?”

Osbourne was hurt by the implication of the statement and teared up again. She said it wasn’t fair to accuse her of racism because she is Morgan’s friend and is defending him.

“I very much feel like I’m about to be put in the electric chair because I have a friend, who many people think is a racist, so that makes me a racist. And for me, at 68 years of age, to have to turn around and say “I ain’t racist.” What’s it gotta do with me?” Osbourne demanded.

Osbourne also asked a number of times for Underwood to explain to her exactly when Morgan had said anything that was racist.

“I will ask you again Sheryl, I’ve been asking you during the break and I’m asking you again, and don’t try and cry cause if anyone should be crying it should be me,” Osbourne snapped.

“Educate me!” Osbourne demanded while tears gathered in her eyes. “Tell me when you have heard him say racist things.”

Then came the vague accusations that it was more about how Morgan phrased his criticism of Markle: “It is not the exact words of racism, it’s the implication and the reaction to it.”

“To not want to address that because she is a black woman, and to try to dismiss it or to make it seem less than what it is that’s what makes it racist,” Underwood declared. “But right now, I’m talking to a woman I believe is my friend and I don’t want anybody here to watch this and think we are attacking you for being racist.”

Osbourne basically indicated it was too late for that. She went on to ask the other women on the set: “So if I like Piers and he’s seen as racist, I’m racist? Is that what you’re saying?” They all denied that was their intention.

“Why can’t it be he just doesn’t like her? Why does it have to be racist?” Osbourne stated.

She sent out a tweet in defense of Morgan: “.@piersmorgan I am with you. I stand by you. People forget that you’re paid for your opinion and that you’re just speaking your truth.” Morgan responded in kind.

Other celebrities attacked Morgan viciously for his Markle statements.

Actress Jameela Jamil excoriated Morgan in a tweet: “May we NEVER have to watch minorities have to go on mainstream news and have to *defend* their right to be treated with dignity and respect… ever again. All while being screamed over by this man.”

On Wednesday, actress and comedian Chelsea Handler posted a clip on Instagram from a 2014 CNN interview where she and Morgan got into it over how he treated her off-camera: “Some a—holes get better, some just stay the same,” she captioned her post.
