As Biden grabs for guns, a West Virginia county votes to become Second Amendment ‘sanctuary’

Democrats like federalism only when it suits their political aims.

Thus, the phenomenon of “sanctuary cities.”

Throughout former President Donald Trump’s tenure, as the president sought to enforce immigration laws, liberal enclaves asserted the “right” not to cooperate with federal agents seeking to remove people who had entered the country illegally – even if that meant sheltering violent criminals on occasion. According to a report last October by the Center for Immigration Studies, 10 states and dozens of cities and counties have proclaimed such status.

But concern about having the gun-grabbers in charge has led conservatives to adopt the practice. In this instance, though, their brand of federalism is to protect against infringements on Americans’ Second Amendment rights.

Jefferson County, West Virginia, is one more recent example.

County commissioners there voted unanimously to make their jurisdiction a haven for gun lovers and those supportive of gun ownership.

County Commissioner Tricia Jackson announced the news in a Facebook post on Thursday:

Tomorrow, February 18, there will be a resolution introduced by the county commission to declare Jefferson County a…

“Yesterday, I made a post letting the citizens of Jefferson County know that a resolution will be brought to the table to vote in favor of Jefferson County becoming a Second Amendment Sanctuary county for law abiding citizens. I am pleased to announce that the resolution passed overwhelmingly at 4-0,” she wrote.

One commissioner abstained.

According to conservative pundit Cassandra Fairbanks, 33 of West Virginia’s 55 counties, as well as three cities and towns, have implemented “sanctuary city” status for protecting gun rights.

But Jefferson County is not only following others in its state. One apparently anti-gun group reported in January 2020 that more than 400 cities across 20 states had passed resolutions “opposing the enforcement of certain gun laws passed by state or federal lawmakers.”

Meanwhile, the report noted, “In other places, sheriffs say they won’t enforce specific gun safety laws and firearm confiscation statutes.”

Many more may follow, and not just in West Virginia, now that President Joe Biden has revealed his true, anti-gun sentiment. As the National Rifle Association noted on Tuesday, Biden used the third year anniversary of the massacre in Parkland, Florida, to call for “commonsense gun law reforms” that include background checks on all gun sales, a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and eliminating immunity for gun manufacturers “who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets.”

The NRA noted that such restrictions would only embolden criminals, while making “criminals out of law-abiding gun owners,” and restricting Americans’ ability to protect themselves, their homes and their families.

The group also warned that stripping away immunity may cripple the gun industry and take the Second Amendment along with it.

Biden’s statement “does mark the administration’s first official push for gun control. However, this should come as little surprise to anyone who has been paying attention to Biden’s increasingly hostile position towards the rights of American gun owners,” the NRA noted.

The group maintained that the Biden campaign’s gun-policy prescriptions “looked like a shopping list for anti-gun extremists,” and pointed out that the new president once “vowed to ‘defeat’ the five million members of the NRA.”

“Yet, despite the repeated rejection of anti-gun policies by the American people, the Biden Administration had decided to forge ahead with these unpopular and unconstitutional policies,” the NRA argued. “Now it’s more important than ever for all gun owners to be informed and engaged in the legislative process.”

That would include, perhaps, tracking the growth of Second Amendment sanctuaries.
