Texas mayor resigns before angry blowup at ‘lazy’ constituents complaining about snowstorm: ‘Get off your a**!’

Now the weather is apparently part of cancel culture.

Texas, like a large part of America, is in the frigid grip of a ferocious winter storm that has plagued communities with various bouts of snow, sleet, freezing rain and temperatures plunging into single-digits, or even lower.

The Lone Star state, however, is unaccustomed to this type of winter weather, which has cut power to hundreds of thousands of homes for varying lengths of time and caused one major highway pile-up that involved more than 100 cars and left at least six people dead. Reports indicate residents have braved the conditions to flood hotels and communal shelters seeking warmth and running water. Experts eyeing winter’s wrath in Texas use terms like “historic” and “unprecedented” to describe what’s now unfolding.

But Tim Boyd, the former mayor of Colorado City, Texas, found a way to generate some heat.

The reason for the adjective before his title is a Facebook post, now vanished from the internet, that illustrated the fierce independence Texans have long prided themselves on. The post is quoted as written.

“Let me hurt some feelings while I have a minute!!” began Boyd, who had led a town of about 4,000 residents some 200 miles west of Dallas.

“No one owes you or your family anything; nor is it the local government’s responsibility to support you during trying times like this! Sink or swim it’s your choice!”

Boyd continued, “The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING! I’m sick and tired of people looking for a damn handout! If you don’t have electricity you step up and come up with a game plan to keep your family warm and safe. If you have no water you deal without and think outside of the box to survive and supply water to your family. If you are sitting at home in the cold because you have no power and are sitting there waiting for someone to come rescue you because your (sic) lazy is direct result of your raising!”

The former mayor, who is a Republican, added, “Only the strong will survive and the weak will parish (sic). Folks God has given us the tools to support ourselves in times like this. This is sadly a product of a socialist government where they feed people to believe that the FEW will work and others will become dependent for handouts.”

Boyd then wrapped up his comments by saying he was sorry that his constituents were without water, electricity — not to mention heat.

But, he added that he would be “damned” if he was going to provide for anyone capable of providing for themselves.

“Bottom line quit crying and looking for a handout! Get off your ass and take care of your own family!” he wrote.

The backlash was predictable in a place where more than a quarter of the residents were stranded without power, and in some ways understandable under those conditions. According to one report, Boyd claimed his family had been harassed and that his wife had been fired because of his rant.

In reply to the outrage, Boyd offered a follow-up post, according to KTXS-TV, saying, “I would never want to hurt the elderly or anyone that is in true need of help to be left to fend for themselves.”

“I was only making the statement that those folks that are too lazy to get up and fend for themselves but are capable should not be dealt a handout,” he added. “Please understand if I had it to do over again I would have just kept my words to myself and if I did say them I would have used better wording and been more descriptive.”

And he claimed his cancellation was self-inflicted, as he had already resigned as mayor and did not plan to run again.
