To borrow from Pastor Martin Niemöller’s reflection on the price of silence in the face of Nazi horror, first they came for the Army — and now they’re coming for the sheriffs.
Following the tragic Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, we’ve seen Democrats in Congress question the loyalty of National Guard troops because an unspecified number may have voted for former President Donald Trump. Additionally, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has announced a temporary “stand down” until early April so that, as he tweeted on Feb. 3, “each service, each command and each unit can have a deeper conversation about this issue” of supposed white nationalist extremism within the ranks.
Now, the left’s declaration of war on the First Amendment and conservatives has opened a new front: cops.

On Tuesday, Axios breathed life into this idea with an article suggesting the need and strategy to “deprogram America’s extremists” – although some would argue that should apply to those afflicted with Trump Derangement Syndrome for the last five years.
Said Axios: “It will take an all-out national effort to dismantle the radicalization pipeline that has planted conspiracy theories in the heads of millions of Americans and inspired last month’s attack on the Capitol, experts tell Axios. Two key measures that could make a difference: Keeping extremists out of the institutions where they could do the greatest damage — like the military, police departments and legislatures, and providing help for those who have embraced dangerous ideologies.”
“A key part of breaking extremists’ rising mainstream influence will be making it unacceptable for white nationalists, anti-government extremists and conspiracy theorists to serve in the military, in police forces or as lawmakers,” the article continued. Former FBI counterterrorism analyst Clint Watts told Axios, “It’s a lot of sheriffs’ departments that make me nervous, because they’re elected. Politics means you go with party.”
Watts has not been shy about seeing radicals in law enforcement, as this tweet from last month shows:
This is the insider threat we should be worried about, this is not an anomaly, just the one who happened to wear the patch https://t.co/nWM3XRGngK

On Tuesday, Fox News host Laura Ingraham discussed this with Fulton County, N.Y., Sheriff Richard Giardino.
The sheriff said the left has revved up what it started last summer, pushing a narrative that “outpaces the facts.”
Elected county sheriffs, Giardino said, serve the Constitution and the public, something progressives cannot abide.
“What they’re seeking to do is eliminate elected sheriffs so they can take control over law enforcement,” he said. “They’re trying to undercut the Constitution. They’re trying to take away power from the sheriffs.”
Giardino emphasized that he doesn’t want QAnon conspiracy theorists or white supremacists on his force, but he said, “They’re trying to paint all of us with the same brush.”
“It continues the narrative from the summer, that all police officers are racists,” he said, even as left-wing critics ignore or dismiss the dozens of children killed in drive-by shootings and the targeting of cops last year.
“They condemn us. They say we’re there to murder people. They set this narrative … and it’s very scary because it continues to undermine law enforcement and authority.”
