Tom Brokaw announced the other day that’s he’s retiring from NBC News after 55 years. Arguably Brokaw’s most significant contribution to his trade was that he got the traditionally, and perhaps naturally, stoic “Greatest Generation” to open up about their experiences, through his 1998 book of that title.
After that, it seemed our grandparents, who had survived the Great Depression and World War II, just kept talking. Snarky New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, in a 2001 piece, noted, “We encouraged our parents to stop being so modest and share their stories. Now they can’t stop gushing and celebrating themselves. Boomers have done a bad, bad thing. … Not satisfied with one Me Generation, we made two.”
If only we could turn back in time. Because if anything, the narcissism has not aged well.
None other than our elected, taxpayer-funded leaders showed the necessity of this on Thursday when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi gave her fellow Democrats, led by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, an hour to share their feelings about the Capitol riot on Jan. 6 – even as Congress has done nothing on COVID relief or mitigation, millions remain unemployed, and our top military leaders are now seeking to root out “white nationalism” from within the ranks while also talking openly about the possibility of nuclear war with Russia and/or China.
The supreme irony of this is that in recent days, after Ocasio-Cortez offered an emotional social media video of her experience, critics have pointed out she was remote from last month’s danger, such as it was. No doubt her feelings were real, but they also were, relative to others in Congress, wildly exaggerated.

Some Democrats openly wept. One was Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who started crying about the riot, even though she admitted she was not at the Capitol on that day. Others denounced their own “white privilege.”

Others wailed about the need for “validation.” On social media, supporters applauded AOC’s group therapy session. Some likened it to gathering “witness statements” ahead of former President Donald Trump’s upcoming impeachment trial.

Others, however, were not so impressed.
This is exactly what we the people pay congress for. To sing koombiya and have emotional support meetings not pass dire stimulus to help everyone during the worst pandemic and economic turmoil this country has seen in all our lives

As Maureen Dowd observed 20 years ago, we created this mess, not only by electing people like Ocasio-Cortez but by giving them space for childish displays. Or perhaps H.L. Mencken said it better, “Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.”
