Controversial Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene will not be punished for odd, if not incendiary, comments she made before entering Congress a month ago – at least by her own party.
After meeting with House Republicans, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy scolded the Georgia freshman and sharply criticized the nature of remarks she made or endorsed that have now become the impetus for Democrats to boot Greene from her committee assignments, and perhaps out of Congress.
“Past comments from and endorsed by Marjorie Taylor Greene on school shootings, political violence, and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories do not represent the values or beliefs of the House Republican Conference,” McCarty said in a statement. “I condemn those comments unequivocally. I condemned them in the past. I continue to condemn them today. This House condemned QAnon last Congress and continues to do so today.”
McCarthy, who had met privately with Greene on Tuesday, added that he had relayed the same message to her.

“I made this clear to Marjorie when we met. I also made clear that as a member of Congress we have a responsibility to hold ourselves to a higher standard than how she presented herself as a private citizen. Her past comments now have much greater meaning. Marjorie recognized this in our conversation,” he said. “I hold her to her word, as well as her actions going forward.”
McCarthy’s decision now shifts the responsibility for disciplining Greene onto Democrats, who desperately seek a new villain now that former President Donald Trump is out of office.
The Hill reported that House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer rejected an offer from McCarthy to kick Greene off the Education and Labor Committee, but allow her to remain on the Budget Committee.
The House is expected to take up that resolution today.
But the issue for Democrats is whether that will suffice.
Nearly one-third of Hoyer’s troops have backed a proposal to expel Greene from the House, which would be a highly controversial move, considering that she won her seat with 75 percent of the vote, roughly the same ration Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi received in her last election.
And even if Democrats succeed in simply relieving Greene of her committee assignments, Republicans will likely keep pressure on Democrats by calling for disciplinary action against Rep. Ilhan Omar, who has repeatedly made comments considered anti-Semitic. And unlike Greene, Omar made those statements after entering the House.

McCarthy referenced this without naming Omar in his statement about Greene – something The Hill did not report in its write-up.
“I understand that Marjorie’s comments have caused deep wounds to many and as a result, I offered Majority Leader Hoyer a path to lower the temperature and address these concerns. Instead of coming together to do that, the Democrats are choosing to raise the temperature by taking the unprecedented step to further their partisan power grab regarding the committee assignments of the other party,” the California Republican said.
“While Democrats pursue a resolution on Congresswoman Greene, they continue to do nothing about Democrats serving on the Foreign Affairs Committee who have spread anti-Semitic tropes, Democrats on the House Intelligence and Homeland Security Committee compromised by Chinese spies, or the Chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee who advocated for violence against public servants,” McCarthy said. “In the end, this resolution continues to distract Congress, especially given the limited time that Speaker Pelosi and the Democrat leadership want the House to debate and work, on what it needs to focus on: getting Americans back to work, getting kids back to school, and providing vaccines to all Americans who need it.”
Greene also alluded to this in a tweet on Wednesday that was directed at Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who is leading the effort to condemn Greene. Wasserman Schultz and others were “throwing Democrat colleagues under the bus. The precedent she’s setting will be used against members of her own party,” Greene tweeted.

Greene apologized to her fellow Republicans on Wednesday for supporting QAnon and other weird conspiracy theories, such as California wildfires being ignited by Jewish space lasers. She was met with a standing ovation by her colleagues at the end of her remarks.
