Almost from the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, the conventional wisdom has ignored or downplayed the idea that the virus was man-made in a Chinese lab.
Steve Hilton of Fox News argues that can no longer be the case.
On “The Next Revolution” Sunday, Hilton pointed out that Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Francis Collins, the head of the National Institutes of Health, had supported the funding of research into “generating,” as they once put it in a 2011 op-ed, a pandemic virus in lab as a vital tool to understanding how they work — and the fruit of that was ultimately the virus now afflicting the globe.
Three years later, the Obama administration halted such research out of safety concerns after some “biosafety incidents” at federal labs. The moratorium applied to current as well as future projects. Yet, according to Hilton, the funding of such experiments did not stop. The government paid roughly $1.8 million for such research until December 2017, when the Trump administration lifted the ban.

The grant money went to a firm, Ecohealth Alliance, linked to the lab at Wuhan Institute of Virology, where the current coronavirus originated, Hilton said. The firm was paid to study whether a bat-related SARS coronavirus could become contagious and spread human-to-human through the respiratory system.
Hilton maintained that scientists at the Wuhan lab had discovered a similar virus in workers who were directed to clean up a mine nearly a decade ago. It was the only one of 152 bat coronavirus samples that could cause a “SARS-like illness.”
“The Wuhan Institute knew that this natural bat virus could infect humans at high doses, could cause a SARS-like illness that could be fatal and was not very transmissible between humans. It was the perfect match” for the U.S.-funded grant to reverse-engineer the virus, Hilton said.
Last year, he added, the Wuhan lab reported that it had just located a virus similar to COVID-19 in its library. But Hilton maintained they knew it was linked back to the virus from the mine and tweaked its description to cover up its origin.
“They analyzed bat coronaviruses and sequenced their genetic information. They then built various chimeras, genetically engineered new viruses, man-made in the lab. They infected human cells with them in the lab. And they then showed that their man-made viruses could replicate as a functional virus,” Hilton noted. “Were they doing all that with the virus they found in the mine, the virus that caused the SARS-like illness? The match between that virus and the work commissioned by the NIAID is so perfect, its impossible to believe they weren’t.”
The firm that received the government’s funding, which is on the World Health Organization team now investigating COVID-19 in China, keeps pushing the idea that the virus is naturally occurring, Hilton said. “To swallow that you’d have to believe a laughably implausible set of coincidences.”
That scenario, according to Hilton: multiple species of bats would have had to infect each other or a person, and then travel 1,000 miles without infecting anyone or anything else, while harboring a virus 10 to 20 times more infectious than any other virus in nature, and wind up at the only place in all of China with lab that had worked for year on the virus that the carrier was already infected with.”
And Hilton noted that after two weeks of questioning, the National Institutes of Health finally answered about the finding, and provided a reply connected to the wrong project. It was “totally deceptive,” Hilton said.
“You can blame China for the lab accident, … and you can certainly blame the Chinese government for their cover-up,” said Hilton, “but the origin of this, the reason it exists, the reason it’s so contagious and infectious, the responsibility for that is increasingly clear.”
It lies with Collins and Fauci, who ignored the ban. Hilton said it was “ludicrous” to think they created the COVID-19 pandemic on purpose, as they have dedicated their lives to fighting infectious diseases.
Still, he said, “They were warned it could happen, and explicitly asked by the Obama administration to stop this kind of research and to stop funding it, and they did it anyway.”
