President Joe Biden headed into office under suspicions he could not be as tough with China as Donald Trump had been.
And it seems the Chinese understand that as well.
Since it became evident Biden would be America’s 46th president, and upon his taking office, the Chinese Communist Party media has sought to throw attaboys Biden’s way while slinging arrows at Trump.
This surfaced on Twitter Thursday when the Global Times, a newspaper controlled by the Communist Party, approvingly shared a tweet designed to take a shot at Trump’s first press secretary, Sean Spicer.

“Day 1 in the White House: How do the first WH press conferences differ under the Trump and Biden administrations?” said the tweet, from a liberal website called The Recount. It featured a 30-second video comparing Spicer’s testy exchange with the media over the size of the January 2017 inauguration crowd with Biden’s spokeswoman Jen Psaki’s smooch-fest with reporters.
In the video, Spicer hotly accuses the media of engaging in “deliberately false reporting.” In contrast, Psaki tells reporters, “There will be times when we see things differently in this room. That’s OK. That’s part of our democracy.”
A day earlier, hours before Biden was sworn in, Xinhua, China’s official state news agency, had tweeted, “Good riddance, Donald Trump.”

Trump had attacked China for unleashing the pandemic, but also for its theft of American intellectual property, one-sided trade deals that fueled our trade deficit, and military aggressiveness.
China was glad to see Trump go.
Victor Gao, a former translator for one-time strongman Deng Xiaoping, told Time magazine after the election, “Trump is fundamentally a person without decency, and you cannot have a friend without decency. Biden is a person with decency — that’s very, very important.”
@POTUS you’re getting glowing recommendations from your commie Chinese buddies.

The Chinese reaction early on indicates the Chinese believe they will have an easier go with Biden, something Biden has not dispelled. While sometimes critical of China’s rulers, Biden also has refused to call China’s communist leaders opponents, saying he sees them more as “competitors,” and has blamed Trump more for the coronavirus than the Chinese.
Part of the reason could be the deals Hunter Biden was trying to cut in China, even while the elder Biden was vice president. In 2013, Hunter snagged a ride on Air Force Two as his father traveled to China and left with a 10-percent stake in an investment firm linked to China’s state banks. As revealed last year, in 2017 he also sought to finagle a yearly arrangement worth $10 million with a Chinese energy company. Part of that funding was supposed to be set aside for Joe Biden, according to the New York Post.
In the Global Times‘ tweet, some saw a common thread:
“Liberal media outlets and Chinese propaganda outlets in lockstep celebrating the new administration’s great relationship with the press,” tweeted Brent Scher of the conservative Washington Free Beacon.
