Dr. Oz urges NY Gov. Cuomo to lift ban on hydroxychloroquine to treat coronavirus

Dr. Mehmet Oz urged New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to reverse his executive order that bans doctors from prescribing the anti-malaria drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to fight the Wuhan coronavirus.

Under Gov. Cuomo’s order, prescriptions of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are limited to a 14-day supply with no refills, and doctors cannot prescribe the drugs outside of FDA-approved uses or clinical trials.

Dr. Oz — a cardiothoracic surgeon — said Cuomo probably did that in order to prevent people from asking their doctors to casually prescribe the drugs so they can hoard it.

“I suspect there were concerns for the folks with rheumatoid arthritis and lupus who are dependent on chloroquine and couldn’t get it,” Oz told Fox News host Sean Hannity. “I think Cuomo passed that law to prevent people from taking it and putting it in their cupboards just in case.”

Dr. Oz said he believes that Americans will not try to hoard chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine if they don’t need it and urged Cuomo to reverse his ban.

“I have more confidence in Americans than that,” Oz said. “It’s an old malaria drug. We’ll have enough of it. We ought to lift the ban.”

The media has fomented panic about the malaria drugs after a Democrat supporter of Hillary Clinton drank chloroquine phosphate — a toxic chemical fish-tank cleaner — in a bid to prevent the coronavirus.

Naturally, the leftist blamed President Trump because she ingested a poison without reading the label that specifically warned that fish-tank cleaner is not for human consumption.

Last weekend, the FDA approved an emergency authorization to allow coronavirus patients to be treated with the anti-malaria drugs, which were shown to be effective in a small French study and in several anecdotal cases.

“Many doctors are prescribing it,” Dr. Oz said. “Until we get randomized clinical data — which I’m hoping we’ll have over the next months — we are not going to know for sure. But there are centers all over the world in France and China who are researching this actively, as we are in America.”

In fact, some physicians say they take small doses of the drugs to prevent themselves from getting COVID-19 amid their constant exposure to coronavirus patients.

Dr. Oz continued: “We probably have 100 reasonable candidates of solutions that could impact whether you can block the virus before it gets into your nose or block it from getting in the cells in your nose and your lungs or blocks it from replicating what’s in your cells or just stop the bad side effects that it causes. Any of those places we can attack it … and we will win. I’m confident about that.”

He added: “Our battle is more the short-term issue. What do we do over the next month? Can we reach our peak in New York in the next two weeks? And in 30 days, can we say, ‘We’re actually coming down everywhere and social distancing is working?’ Other tactics like face masks are going to come to the forefront. We’re going to be looking for ways of living our lives and still staying effectively distant from everyone else.”

President Trump was torched by the left-wing media as a racist for imposing a travel ban on China in January.

However, Dr. Oz praised Trump’s early travel ban, saying it probably saved a lot of lives.

“Most everybody now agrees that that was a good idea,” Oz said. “At the time, a lot of us were uncomfortable [because the media screeched that it was racist]. But that effectively slowed down the traveling of the virus. We would’ve been hit a lot harder [without the travel ban].”
