During a heated interview on Saturday afternoon with Enrique Tarrio, the Cuban minority who leads the pro-free-speech, pro-liberty fraternity known as the Proud Boys, a CNN “journalist” accused him of terrorizing “people of color” (he is one, FYI) with his “language” …
The bizarre interview occurred after the formal conclusion of the Proud Boy’s “End Domestic Terrorism” rally. Held that morning in Portland, Oregon, the rally was designed to take a stand against all forms of domestic terrorism, be they white supremacist terrorism, left-wing terrorism, etc.

The interview began with “journalist” Sara Sidner claiming that, before the rally on Saturday, another member of the group — Joe Biggs — “said some pretty violent stuff on Twitter” about Antifa. Biggs was in fact banned from Twitter early last month, so it’s unclear what she was talking about. Tarrio replied by skipping over her claim and explaining the purpose of Saturday’s rally.
“We came over here to raise awareness for domestic terrorism,” he said. “Now, that’s not just for Antifa. That includes the shooting that happened in El Paso, the shooting that happened in Dayton, Ohio, the attempted firebombing in Tacoma, Washington, and the shooting at the ICE facility in San Antonio. I could go on.”
He added, “That’s what we came here to do. We’ve been planning this for two months. The state law broke the camel’s back was the attack on Andy Ngo, an independent journalist who was just trying to document Antifa, and he got a brain hemorrhage from it.”

Sidner then tried to pounce again by bringing up the arrest a day earlier of Joey Gibson, the de facto leader of Patriot Prayer, an entirely separate free-speech group that’s based in Portland. Gibson was arrested as per an incident that had occurred between Patriot Prayer and Antifa two months earlier.
Tarrio replied by briefly defending Gibson, telling Sidner that he was “spit on, pepper sprayed.”
That’s when the CNN “journalist” hit him with the terrorism question.
“I don’t understand why you’re showing up?” Sidner, a white woman, said. “To antagonize the mayor or the city? There are people here, people of color in particular, that feel like they’re being terrorized because of language used by groups like yours against them.”
Fact-check: TECHNICALLY TRUE.

Sidner added that Proud Boys has a “history” of violence and pointed to an altercation in New York City last year in which members of the group allegedly attacked “anti-fascist” Antifa demonstrators, as the media had falsely described them.
Tarrio pushed back on this claim, arguing that Antifa had started the brawl by hurling a bottle of urine at the Proud Boys. In explaining why only the Proud Boys were arrested while the members of Antifa were let off scot-free, he pointed to liberal politicians.
“The powers of the governor and the mayor of New York, the same thing that [Portland Mayor] Ted Wheeler wants to do,” he said, drawing a contrast between New York leaders’ tacit support for left-wing extremism and Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler’s much more blatant support.
“I’ve had an open dialogue with Portland PD for the past month,” he continued. “And then here we are. There was two different stories, there was Portland PD’s story and Ted Wheeler’s story. And again, Ted Wheeler needed an axe to grind. What we did is we came, our message was bold today. We didn’t stay there, we didn’t antagonize anybody, we — we held our hands in prayer, we bent a knee, and then we went ahead and left. We said our message with zero violence.”
“What is the message that you are trying to send?” Sidner then asked. “Because a lot of people see the message as one of intolerance, xenophobia, racism. What is the message that you are trying to actually send?”
Tarrio replied by pointing out the otherwise clear-cut fact that seems to have escaped the CNN “journalist.”
“I’m a person of color,” he said. “I’m Cuban, right. My family, two of my family members got killed in Castro’s regimen. It’s a difference of opinion of whether it’s people of color, white people, it’s always about race. Today, our message wasn’t about race. It’s never been about race.”
He added, “When you join our ranks, we don’t ask you what race you are, what religion you are. We just accept you for who you are.”
The same cannot be said of CNN, which has a history of racial discrimination against blacks.

“Former and current black employees on Tuesday filed a class action lawsuit against Atlanta-based CNN, Turner Broadcasting and New York based parent company Time Warner for racial discrimination,” the Atlantic Journal-Constitution reported in 2016.
In a statement released at the time, the employees’ attorney Daniel Meachum alleged that the company had been discriminating against black people for over 20 years.
“[W]e have uncovered stories involving abuse of power, nepotism, revenge, retaliation, and discrimination,” he said.
“This discrimination represents a company-wide pattern and practice rather than a series of isolated incidents,” the actual lawsuit read.
As of August 2019, the Proud Boys has never once been accused of racial discrimination.
