Trump hints at potential military action against Cuba

Daily Caller News Foundation

President Donald Trump teased potential military action against Cuba following multiple reports suggesting the United States Navy was gearing up for operations against the Caribbean country.

Speaking with reporters Friday night aboard Air Force One, the president responded to a question about the potential for operations in Cuba by Daily Caller Reporter Reagan Reese. Recent reports suggested U.S. Navy drones flew off the coast of Cuba and the northern Caribbean Sea, specifically around Havana and Guantanamo Bay.

“There’ve been reports that the Pentagon’s preparing for military action in Cuba. Are those reports true? Is Cuba next?” Reese asked Trump.

“Well, it depends on what your definition of ‘military action’ is,” Trump responded after pausing for a moment.

“Would it look like Venezuela or Iran?” Reese then asked.

“It depends on what your definition of ‘military action’ is, as Bill Clinton would say,” Trump responded again. “You understand that? No, a lot of people don’t understand that.”

The remarks come hours after Trump appeared at a Turning Point USA event in Phoenix, during which he again appeared to tease military action against Cuba.

“And very soon this great strength will also bring about a day — 70 years and waiting — it’s called a new dawn for Cuba,” Trump remarked during the speech. “We’re gonna help them out with Cuba, we have a lot of great Cuban-Americans … People that were brutally treated, whose families were killed, brutalized. Now, watch what happens.”

Cuba’s power grid faced a major collapse in March after a separate failure also led to a partial country-wide blackout. Days later, protesters ransacked and set fire to a Communist Party headquarters in Morón.

Trump previously authorized a military-backed law enforcement operation into Venezuela which successfully captured and removed dictator Nicolás Maduro. The president also suggested the U.S. would run the country for “years” following the operation, which also led to the opening of oil reserves for private investors.
