Newsom under fire for insanely overbudget ‘wildlife bridge to nowhere’ boondoggle

California Governor and presidential wannabe Gavin Newsom is under fire for a “wildlife bridge to nowhere” boondoggle.

The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing (WAWC) project broke ground in 2022 and was promoted as a massive overpass for animals spanning above ten lanes of the 101 Freeway in Southern California, the New York Post reported.

At the time, Newsom said the state (taxpayers) committed $54 million to the project and estimated another $10 million would be needed to complete the bridge by 2025.

Fast forward a few years, and the cost has reportedly skyrocketed, and the project is incomplete.

WAWC leader and environmentalist, Beth Pratt, says it’s not surprising and blames President Trump.

“There’s no boondoggle,” she insisted. “Given the times we’re living in,” a widely reported $21 million overage is “not that bad,” Pratt argued, according to the Post.

Pratt said “tariffs, inflation, [and] labor problems” are the issues holding back the project.

While some X users argued that a greenway bridge for wildlife may be a worthwhile project, the fact that Democrats seem to never be able to complete a project on time and within budget is a perpetual problem:

I live south of San Francisco. The built a tunnel under 280 near my house for the animals. It works, but deer still get hit on 280 because they cannot read. Also the mountain lions and coyotes started to hang out near the tunnel to eat the animals using it.
