Jasmine Crockett’s Dem opponent peels away at her lead as Texas Senate race heats up

Texas Democrats are eating up the red meat Jasmine Crockett is serving, according to a local poll showing she holds a substantial lead over her primary opponent for a Senate seat.

The two-week University of Texas/Texas Politics Project Poll, which ends on Feb 27th, shows Rep. Crockett leading against fellow Dem James Talarico 56 percent to 44 percent among likely Democratic primary voters.

But, there’s a hitch.

The poll began before Talarico made a splash on CBS’s “Late Show” with Stephen Colbert, where he was reportedly a big hit among the left and subsequently raised millions after his appearance.

Judging from a local ad and news, Crockett is feeling the heat from Dem voters who finally want to hear something more meaningful than just “Orange Man Bad”:

Crockett still holds name recognition and a very high favorability ranking of 71 percent over Talarico’s 59 percent among Dems, according to the poll.

The Texas primary is on March 3, where the Dem victor will go on to face off against their Republican opponent.

The Republican field is crowded with candidates, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and incumbent Sen. John Cornyn are currently statistically tied at 36 percent and 34 percent, according to the survey.

Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) follows with 26 percent support and is putting the pedal to the metal.

“Texas has set a record for the most expensive Senate race in U.S. history, reaching a total of $110 million in campaign ad spending. Republicans have outspent Democrats, $88 million to approximately $22 million,” according to The Hill.
