The news media is at it again. Their judgmental headlines about how the big, bad ICE agents detained a 5-year-old will tug at the heartstrings of those who want to believe that Donald Trump is the anti-Christ and ICE are Nazi storm-troopers. The news media, with their creative descriptions, heart-wrenching photographs and false narratives, make it seem like the child was zip-tied and tossed in the trunk of a squad car, but this is far from what happened. The true account of what happened comes from an ICE official who actually reported the facts of the situation:
“When officers approached Conejo Arias, he and his child were in a vehicle. Arias fled from law enforcement on foot, abandoning his child in the middle of winter in a vehicle. One of our officers stayed behind with that child while other officers apprehended his father.”
“After conducting the arrest, my officers stayed with the child. They cared for him, took him to get something to eat from a drive-through restaurant, and spent hours ensuring he was taken care of. Again, my officers did that, not his father.”
“My officers did everything they could to reunite him with his family. Tragically, when we approached the door of his residence, the people inside refused to take him in and open the door. Let me say it again: they saw the young boy, and they refused to open the door and take him back.”
Sadly, politicians, commentators and disingenuous reporters couldn’t wait to jump on this story like polar bears ravenously devouring salmon in the Arctic tundra. They couldn’t wait to spread it all over social media because it supported their agenda, which is the vilification of ICE. It is this constant barrage of fiction over fact and subjective reporting that panders to a base of individuals who don’t want the truth; they want narratives that support their political agenda and see it as encouragement for lawlessness.
We have seen this form of yellow journalism rampant because outrageous headlines mean clicks, likes and ratings for media whores whose narcissism outweighs their social responsibility. One side says, “She wasn’t trying to run down an ICE officer; she was trying to run away.” The other side said, “She was trying to kill an ICE officer.” So which account should we believe?
Many years ago, I spent time as a reporter for two different newspapers. I relied on what I was taught in college that journalism was about the who, what, where, when, why and how and above all, reporting must be objective. In those days, there were publications like the National Enquirer and Star Magazine, which were novelty publications that relied on sensationalism and fake news to appeal to people’s interests and sell their product. Today, honest journalism appears to be more of an anomaly than a standard of a once noble profession.
The growth of social media and the overwhelming masses of those who believe what they read and are willing dupes in spreading disinformation faster than the plague, has turned most news outlets into National Enquirer-like sources for ridiculous headlines and the spreading of fabrications to either support some leftist agenda or simply to get ratings.
The gutless talk show hosts who sit in their comfortable chairs and spew nonsense and vilify courageous individuals like Nick Shirley for exposing insane amounts of taxpayer funded fraud because they lack the dedication to the truth. Talking heads like the harpies on The View have a lot to say, but exist solely within their self-righteous bubbles and deliver condescending attitudes that yield them handsome salaries, yet wouldn’t dare exit their safe studio to search for the truth because they are merely anti-Trump cheerleaders. They call themselves journalists, but they are as far away from journalism is Mayor Mamdani is from being an entrepreneur.
The constant hyperbole and rhetoric from politicians is expected because that is part of their job description, but true journalists are supposed to report the facts of stories without injecting their own opinions. The majority of so-called journalists today are not journalists; they are influencers, they are editorialists and they are political prostitutes who thrive on disseminating false stories to pacify those who want reassurance that their views are true.
Despite those who blindly follow the snake oil salesmen in the media, many Americans have awakened to realize that those behind desks and microphones are not telling them the truth. The truth has become a casualty of honest reporting. Selective fact checking, fake headlines and agenda driven reports are all tools to manipulate and create propaganda.
Of course, there are two sides to every story when we can’t discern motives; however, there are also facts that are not dependent on the side one chooses to believe. Do we know what was in the mind of Tyler Robinson who is accused of the murder of Charlie Kirk? Do we know what was in the mind of Renee Good prior to her hitting the gas pedal? We can make assumptions, but can’t say with any degree of certainty what motivated these individuals. Factually, though, we do know Charlie was shot and killed and we know Renee Good refused to comply with the orders of the ICE officer who shot her.
I began writing this article before another story had quickly gone viral. It is the story of the death of Alex Jeffrey Pretti. Once again, the different accounts of what transpired are night and day. One social media called it an assassination of an “unarmed observer,” “an innocent nurse,” while other sources referred to ICE agents as “cowardly thugs.” Other reports stated that Pretti was armed with a 9MM pistol, 2 rounds of ammunition and refused ICE agent warnings before he was killed. So which version is an accurate account of what happened?
America hasn’t been this divided since events that led up to the Civil War between abolitionists and proponents of slavery caused the greatest loss of life in American history over a four year period. Is this the endgame? Today, the culpability of the media and those who seek to divert attention from other issues and turn up the flames that lead to heated exchanges and violence in the streets is unprecedented. The voice of reason and call for calm has been drowned out by the loud whistles and shouts of those who are encouraged by those whose intentions are to incite and to report falsehoods that support whatever narrative they have in mind without consideration for the damage done by this type of reporting, and the end result for our beloved country is pain and suffering.
