White and wrong

Op-ed views and opinions expressed are solely those of the author.

In the mid 1980’s, I was in my second year of teaching middle school and I saw an African-American male with a Caucasian girl in a headlock in the hallway of the school where I was teaching.  It wasn’t violent, as they were obviously playing, but it was definitely inappropriate and violated school rules, so I walked over to them and said in a calm voice, “Break it up.”  He ignored me and continued, and I raised my voice and said, “BREAK IT UP!” He reluctantly released her and then mouthed off to me, so I immediately took him to the discipline office.  The student’s brother showed up at school and a claim was made that I targeted him because he was black and I am white. The fact that he was assaulting, whether playing or not, a young girl seemed to escape this young man and his brother.  He was given detention and the baseless claim about me was dismissed.

The following semester, this young man was in my class, and we got along well.  After a few months of him being in my class, I asked him why he claimed I was being racist when that incident occurred.  He looked at me and said, “It was the only excuse I had to get myself out of trouble.”  This is a perfect example of what happens when apologists use race as a way of getting out of trouble.

It’s been approximately 40 years since this occurred, and America has gone down a very dark and biased road.  The 70’s and 80’s were decades that were about affirmative action and attempts by liberals to rectify past injustices.  Since this time, the cries of racism grow louder, but can anyone say that black people today have it harder than the blacks living in the late 1800’s, or most of the 1900’s?  Racism has become the battle cry for those who, like my former student, are seeking an excuse for bad behavior. When caught, the race card and the victim card are the only 2 cards played by individuals, like Tim Walz, who don’t even realize they aren’t playing with a full deck.

In Walz’s state, he and other bureaucrats make excuses for blatant fraud and then point fingers at everyone instead of looking in the mirror because all this happened under their watch.  They fail to see that right and wrong are not subjective or based on a perpetrator’s race.

When Governor Walz and media members can sit back and cry racism and white supremacy and blame people like Nick Shirley (whose nose for news and objective journalism is what is missing with the mainstream media) for exposing outrageous fraud, there is something very wrong.  I can guarantee that the same media pundits who vilify Nick Shirley for his investigative reporting would be lining up to pat him on the back if he was uncovering republican fraudulent behavior.

It’s been decades and the terminology has changed, and there are many people who believe that the best way to deal with injustice is to unjustly punish those who suffer the fate of being born white.  Disparate impact, preferential treatment, white privilege, affirmative action, leveling the playing field, anti-racism, racial equity, critical race theory, DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion), white nationalism, Black Lives Matter, decolonization, inclusion, marginalization, systemic racism, and white supremacy are all buzz words and expressions used by woke individuals who want make excuses or get something for nothing.

Recently in Congress, Representative Summer Lee (D), Pennsylvania, introduced HR 40, titled the Reparations Now Resolution in the United States Congress in May, 2025.  In San Francisco, Mayor Dan Lurie signed a reparations bill that could give eligible black residents 5 million dollars each, which is interesting because California entered the union as a free state.  If you think fraud exists in Minnesota, wait until all the frauds show up to pick up their 5 million dollar checks with claims that they are the ancestor of slaves.

No one can ever justify what was done to black Americans; however, those who want to point the finger exclusively at whites and punish present day white people are extremely myopic.  They make it seem like slavery was a white created institution, when slavery has existed for millennia, going back to biblical times and was particularly a large part of what Muslim traders and African tribes did on the continent of Africa for centuries. No one can justify Jim Crow laws; however, at what point is the debt ever paid to people who have never suffered the injustices of generations of people who are now dead?

Are DEI quotas the answer?  Is denying competent people based on their race a fair solution? How can one argue that making someone a slave based on race is bad, but denying someone a job or admission to college based on race is good?

Is it acceptable for black people to be angry at what was done to them because of the color of their skin, but not acceptable for white people who suffer discrimination to be angry?  I’ve met many white liberals, but I never met one who was willing to give up his job or home or any other benefit to someone whom they described as marginalized.  The hypocrisy of white liberals who use all the correct terminology or who would bow down and kiss the feet of members of Black Lives Matter, but who would make excuses when asked to sacrifice their personal source of income so a “marginalized” person could be elevated to rectify some past injustice.

The double standard of skin color being a source of a benefit, but historically decried as unjust, defies logic.  The past is not, nor will it ever be, perfect or equal.  People are born into a myriad of situations and life is not fair.  This is not only regarding race, but in terms of genetic illnesses, physical characteristics, family backgrounds and so many other aspects of life.  The child born with serious birth defects does not enter the world with an equal opportunity as someone born healthy.  Children born to the wealthiest people do not have the same opportunities available to them as those born to poor families.  Some people have hills to climb, while others must climb mountains and that’s just a fact of life that liberals can’t seem to comprehend.

How did we ever go from the beautiful words of judging people by the content of their character to judging people, instead, by the melanin content in their skin?
