After years of being fawned over, a former first lady took to the pitch to sell her latest self-aggrandizing book on her personal fashion as “one of this country’s most influential figures.”
Many likely recall the sweeping snub of first lady Melania Trump as fashion magazines shied away from using the literal supermodel for their cover, but later had no problem platforming First Lady Jill Biden and her sometimes comical outfits. Now, as Melania has continued to feel the sting of Trump Derangement Syndrome, former First Lady Michelle Obama was making the rounds lamenting how she and her husband allegedly “didn’t get the grace” of other first families.
Ahead of the release of a new picture-centric book, “The Look,” Obama joined host Robin Roberts for an interview on “Good Morning America,” where excerpts suggested a retcon contrary to the Camelot star treatment corporate media had offered the family of the first black president.
“You said you were ‘all too aware that as the first black couple we couldn’t afford any missteps.’ And you also say, ‘as a black woman I was under a particularly white hot glare,’” said Roberts before she asked, “Did you feel that?”
“For sure,” replied Obama. “You can’t afford to get anything wrong because you didn’t — at least until the country came to know us — we didn’t get the grace that I think some other families have gotten.”

In the years since leaving the White House, the Obamas have managed to have one of the most lucrative post-administration runs of any first family while continuing to hold sway with the Democratic Party. Many on the left had even been actively calling for the former first lady to top the ticket for the 2024 presidential election instead of then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
Now, months after emasculating her husband on the internet by expressing how grateful she was that she hadn’t birthed a son who “would’ve been a Barack Obama,” reactions on social media were reminding Obama how her time in the White House really went, as the blurb for her book described her as “one of this country’s most influential figures.”
As one social media user succinctly summed up, “Eight years of magazine covers, late-night praise, and Hollywood adoration–but sure, tell us more about how unfair it all was.”
Piggybacking off that commentary, another user further reminded about the self-imposed handicaps that the Republican Party’s presidential candidates for 2008 and 2012 — Arizona Sen. John McCain and then-former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — had in running against Obama, as he said, “All true. Both McCain and Romney treated him as if they might bruise him if they criticized him strongly.”
“Obama is easily the worst POTUS we’ve ever had, he owns his own two terms and Biden’s four years of disasters,” he went on as others slammed Obama’s pity parade and questioned, “If nonstop magazine covers and Netflix deals aren’t ‘grace,’ what is?”
