Vice President Kamala Harris was denounced as a “stereotypical leftist” by the Trump campaign over comments she once made about renaming Columbus Day as she delivered a new divisive message on the holiday.
Those comments came in 2019 as then-Senator Harris spoke to voters in New Hampshire in her failed 2020 bid for the White House. Videos of Harris talking about the “history” of the discovery of America surfaced Monday as the federal holiday was observed.

“Kamala Harris is your stereotypical leftist. Not only does she want to raise taxes and defund the police – she also wants to cancel American traditions like Columbus Day,” Karoline Leavitt, the Trump campaign’s national press secretary told Fox News Digital.
“President Trump will make sure Christopher Columbus’ great legacy is honored and protect this holiday from radical leftists who want to erase our nation’s history like Kamala Harris,” Leavitt added.
In 2021, President Joe Biden formally recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day and has since then issued an official proclamation each year he’s been in office.
In that same year, Harris said that the U.S. “must not shy away” from its “shameful past” as she blasted explorers from Europe who had ushered “in a wave of devastation for tribal nations.”

“Since 1934, every October the United States has recognized the voyage of the European explorers who first landed on the shores of the Americas,” she said. “But that is not the whole story. That has never been the whole story.”
“Those explorers ushered in a wave of devastation for tribal nations – perpetrating violence, stealing land, and spreading disease,” she continued. “We must not shy away from this shameful past, and we must shed light on it and do everything we can to address the impact of the past on native communities today.”
Each year, the vice president has also only referred to Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
For generations, Indigenous people have protected their lands, languages, knowledge, and traditions.
On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor these many contributions and recommit to working alongside Indigenous people to ensure their communities thrive for generations to come.

But it is not only Harris coming under fire, her running mate Gov. Tim Walz sparked the ire of the Italian American Civil Rights League (IACRL) which denounced him as a racist after a statue depicting Christopher Columbus was torn down by protesters in 2020.
“It was an act of civil disobedience that we need to make sure people feel that there is a proper outlet to address what are legitimate concerns around what they view as a genocidal monument that they have to walk through in their democracy,” Walz said at the time.
During the BLM riots in 2020, rioters tore down a statue of Christopher Columbus outside the MN State Capitol.
