Middle of the road messaging was marked as a “slap in the face” from the former president’s two-time running mate as the GOP leader unloaded on others in defense of his abortion stance.

Monday, former President Donald Trump released a video statement on Truth Social where he applauded efforts to preserve in vitro fertilization (IVF), affirmed his appointment of Supreme Court justices responsible for the overturning of Roe v. Wade and encouraged the “will of the people” be heard as legislative authority was returned to the states.

Former Vice President Mike Pence considered the position a “retreat” as “too many Republican politicians are all too ready to wash their hands of the battle for life.”

Releasing his own statement on X, Pence began, “President Trump’s retreat on the Right to Life is a slap in the face to the millions of pro-life Americans who voted for him in 2016 and 2020. By nominating and standing by the confirmation of conservative justices, the Trump-Pence Administration helped send Roe v. Wade to the ash heap of history where it belongs and gave the pro-life movement the opportunity to compassionately support women and unborn children.”

“In the landmark Dobbs decision, the Supreme Court returned the question of abortion to the states and the American people,” the vice president recognized. “The American people elect presidents, senators and congressmen, and a majority of Americans long to see minimum national protections for the unborn in federal law. But today, too many Republican politicians are all too ready to wash their hands of the battle for life.”

“Republicans win on life when we speak the truth boldly and stand on the principle that we all know to be true — human life begins at conception and should be defended from womb to tomb,” he asserted.

“However much our Republican nominee or other candidates seek to marginalize the cause of life,” concluded Pence, “I know pro-life Americans will never relent until we see the sanctity of life restored to the center of American law in every state in this country.”

Trump’s vice president wasn’t alone in pushing back on the election-focused position that encouraged, “Always go by your heart, but we must win. We have to win.”

Mainstays of the pro-life movement and major organizations like Abby Johnson, the March for Life and Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser had expressed how they were “deeply disappointed” in the position.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham (R), a constant supporter of Trump, “respectfully disagree[d]” with the president, becoming a target on Truth Social in the process.

Many politically savvy voters and politicians see the move as strategic, instead of a “slap in the face.” They understand the concept of playing chess instead of checkers.

Amid a flurry of posts defending his position on abortion, the president took particular aim at the “great disservice to the Republican Party, and to our Country” that Graham was doing and in one message wrote he, “should spend more time focusing on all of the many people being killed because of our now non-existent Border, and the millions of people dying in senseless, never-ending Wars that he constantly favors and promotes, and should spend less time on taking away our Great Roe v. Wade Victory of sending a complicated and controversial Issue back to the States where, according to Highly Respected Legal Scholars on both sides, it belongs.”

“The Democrats are thrilled with Lindsey, because they want this Issue to simmer for as long a period of time as possible,” he continued. “They are destroying our Country, and they don’t want to talk about Inflation, a Bad Economy, the Horrible Open Border, Rigged Elections, Afghanistan, Ukraine/Russia, or the Attack on Israel, all of which would never have happened if I were President. Great job Lindsey!”

The president also fired off at Dannenfelser as he named her too when he suggested they “should study the 10th Amendment and States’ Rights. When they do, they should proudly get on with helping Republicans to WIN ELECTIONS, rather than making it impossible for them to do so!”

Trump further slighted the lawmaker as he said, “I blame myself for Lindsey Graham, because the only reason he won in the Great State of South Carolina is because I Endorsed him!”
