Matthew McConaughey continues to exert his celebrity influence on national politics and in an extensive new essay, the beloved actor discussed his experiences during his visit to the nation’s capital where he delivered a sales pitch for a gun control bill during a White House presser in the aftermath of the tragic shooting at a Texas elementary school earlier this year.
The 52-year-old performer who flirted with a run for the Texas governorship is a native of Uvalde, the site of the massacre of 19 young children and their teachers who were slaughtered by an 18-year-old lunatic in May, and just the man who could be brought in by Democrats to push for restrictions on the Second Amendment as they sought to capitalize on the national outrage over the tragedy to push their disarmament agenda.
McConaughey praised the legislation and its funding for the red flag laws which expose law-abiding gun owners to having their guns confiscated without due process which he hailed as a “shining example” of compromise which it was with 15 Senate Republicans betraying their constituents to deliver a major victory to President Joe Biden and the gun grabbers.
In a wide-ranging essay which was published in Esquire magazine with a cover featuring a picture of the actor wearing a white suit and standing knee-deep in water, the star reflected on the Uvalde shootings while issuing a call to take on political “extremists” whom he accused of manufacturing “false fractures among us” in the photo-laden piece that is already drawing rave reviews from the media weeks before the critical midterm elections.
After emotionally detailing his trip to the traumatized Uvalde in the aftermath of the shootings, the actor recounted the trip to Washington, D.C. made by him and his wife Camila to lobby for gun control, saying that they had “no concrete plan other than to knock on Senator Mitch McConnell’s door and hopefully land a meeting.”
According to McConaughey, the knock on the GOP Senate Minority Leader’s door soon “had become thirty-odd scheduled meetings with senators and representatives from across the political spectrum,” as politicians were drawn to his star power and celebrity influence like moths to candlelight.
Two of those who met with the actor during his mission to push gun control were top congressional Democrats Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi who both took to Twitter to boast of their sit-downs with the “Dallas Buyer’s Club” star.

“I arrived in Washington with such a reverence for our government and those who run it. While I’m not going to say that I lost that reverence, I did see the most powerful legislators in America playing an implicit political game, one they seemed to be handcuffed to, even systematically imprisoned by, as if it were the price of entry,” the actor wrote in his essay.
“I learned just how frustrating politics can be. There’s often more arguing about where, how, and who started a fire than working together to put the damn thing out. It sometimes feels like politicians don’t really want solutions, because solutions would put them out of a job,” McConaughey said in a scathing critique of politicians.
“Optics are often prized over substance—who gets the credit often takes precedence over whom that credit is serving, or how well. With a disparity between belief and action, it’s hard to be in the make-a-difference business if you’re only in the reelection business,” he added. “I was told on more than two occasions that the best way to remain in power is to vote no on everything—and while I understand that the wheels of government are constitutionally engineered to spin slowly in the mud, I learned that some consider their political purpose to be holding the hose over the dirt. Our government has deficits to repair, and not just the monetary kind.”
“It seems that each party is so harmfully consumed by despising the opposition that they’ve become little more than counterpunchers—so focused on the parry and the party defense that they’ve become reactive by default. They’ve lost sight of their own values and vision, thereby ceding their power to the fringes. That’s a problem,” he said in what seemed like a pox on both houses.
After again expressing his devout support for red flag laws in his essay, claiming that they protect due process and “should be the law of the land,” the actor took aim at the unnamed “extremists” in his piece.
“Because most Americans, myself included, don’t stand on the political fringes. We are reasonable and responsible, and we share more values than we’re being told we do—and we believe that meeting each other in the middle is in service of the greater good. We have the majority. We have the numbers,” he proclaimed.
“That’s why it’s high time we take the megaphone back from the extremists who’ve been manufacturing these false fractures among us. They’ve been selling us soft porn at the pep rally for too long. It’s time to kick them off the port and starboard sides of the boat on which American democracy sails . . . or at least relegate them to mopping the deck,” McConaughey declared, without any acknowledgment that the most divisive voices are those almost exclusively on the political left and within the Democrat Party which has long been in bed with the Hollywood cultural elite that the actor is a member of.
