Bill Maher ambushes pro-Trump country star Trace Adkins: ‘Who won the last election?’

On Friday, HBO host Bill Maher spoke with Trump fan and country singer Trace Adkins, who voted for the former president, and couldn’t resist asking him a blatant gotcha question, “Who won the 2020 election?”

Maher had special criticism for President Biden’s politically divisive “The Continued Battle for the Soul of the Nation” speech that tore into Trump and those who support him. But he did manage to sneak in the question on who won the election before the end of his interview with Adkins.

“Who won the last election? I’m sorry I didn’t… just thought I’d sneak that in,” Maher laughed.

“Joe Biden won the last election,” Adkins responded without hesitation.

“Oh, there you go! And you know…” Maher, showing surprise, replied.

“What did you think I was going to say?” Adkins asked.

“I don’t know. But, you know, I thought Joe Biden made a bit of a mistake in the speech he made a couple of weeks ago when he talked about MAGA nation, because MAGA… I’ve said this for years. You can hate Trump. You can’t hate the people who like him or voted for him. It doesn’t mean they’re all crazy. It doesn’t mean they’re all racist, doesn’t mean they’re all bad people. The people who think that Biden didn’t win the election, yes, they’re a little crazy and they’re not factually based. But we have to come together. We have to be able to do shows with Susan Sarandon and marry Gwen Stefani. And love each other like you and I do,” Maher asserted.

“Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about. Yeah, that’s what you’re talking about,” Adkins agreed.

Adkins is starring in the new Fox TV series “Monarch” with Susan Sarandon. He seemed to enjoy the interview with Maher about the show and the comic occasionally told a funny joke at Adkins’ expense.

“We’re indoors, you can take the hat off,” Maher quipped, following up with a poke at the country star, “Oh, is that sh-t on your shoes?”

Adkins is a well-known conservative but he told Maher that he stayed away from political discussions with his uber-liberal fellow “Monarch” star Susan Sarandon to keep the peace.

After Maher said that he hoped the two Monarch co-stars became “fast friends” despite their ideological differences, Adkins responded, “We did, I think. There were no issues. We did our work and stayed away from everything else.”

“A couple of times maybe a current event or something would happen that morning, and she’d be watching the news, and she’d say something to me about it. But it was very brief, and we just didn’t go there. We just stayed away from it. What’s the point?” he commented.

Maher proclaimed that should provide inspiration for how the country can move forward, red or blue, during this polarizing time.

“Grievance junkies, though, they have to do that. They have to have something to whine about. I don’t get up in the morning looking for something to whine about,” Adkins asserted.

“Monarch” debuted Sunday and is one of Fox’s highest-profile new series of the fall season according to The Hollywood Reporter.
