A bloody sneaker and a straw hat worn by the killer and seen in surveillance footage were found chopped up in an apparent attempt to destroy damning evidence connected to the murder according to the Daily Mail.

Clark County Public Administrator Robert Telles, 45, was arrested Wednesday evening in connection to the brutal stabbing death of veteran investigative journalist Jeff German, 69, who worked for the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Telles is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center on an open murder charge according to Sheriff Joe Lombardo.

During a press conference that was held on Thursday, police reported that Telles was seen near German’s home the morning that he was killed wearing an orange vest and a large, wide-brimmed straw hat attempting to disguise himself. Authorities would later find his DNA at the crime scene.

The hat and shoe were “cut in a manner that was likely to destroy evidence,” Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Captain Dori Koren asserted.

The murder weapon has not been found yet but the search is ongoing for it. German was stabbed multiple times on Friday morning and left to die in front of his home. Police oddly did not learn of the murder until the next day.

German was a highly regarded investigative reporter who worked at the Las Vegas Sun for two decades and has been with the Review-Journal for ten years. His specialty was political corruption and crime.

Telles, who is a Democrat, lost his reelection bid in June after German wrote a series of pieces exposing a toxic work environment at his office and an illicit affair with an employee. Allegations included “emotional stress, bullying, and favoritism that led to secret videotaping of the boss and a co-worker outside the office.”

German published a story that included a video of a married Telles exiting a vehicle with his lover, Roberta Lee-Kennett. She left the backseat of the car at the same time as Telles did and can be seen hoisting her skirt down.

The clip was published by German in May.

“Telles was upset about articles that were being written by German as an investigative journalist that exposed potential wrongdoing, and Telles had publicly expressed his issues with the reporting,” Koren noted.

The suspect was also incensed that there was additional reporting “pending” and he accused his political opponent and German of engaging in a conspiracy to take him down.

“Shortly after, German came outside of the garage and went to the side of the house where an altercation took place between the suspect and the victim,” Koren stated during the briefing. “At that time, the victim was stabbed multiple times.”

A vehicle that matched the description of Telles’ maroon GMC Denali was seen parked in front of German’s home on the morning of the murder. Police determined it was the same car the suspect used to flee the scene of the crime.

“This has been an unusual case from the beginning,” Sheriff Lombardo remarked at the news conference. “It is troublesome because it is a journalist and we expect journalism to be open and transparent and a watchdog for government.”

Wednesday evening at about 6 pm police and SWAT teams returned to Telles’ home in tactical gear and surrounded the residence. Later, he was arrested and taken out of the home on a stretcher. He reportedly has self-inflicted wounds that were not life-threatening.

Neighbors told the Daily Mail that police climbed over their fence to access the garden of the four-bedroom, $660,000 home that Telles shares with his wife Mae and their three children.

It’s also being reported that two SWAT teams had been involved in the raid and that a robot was sent in first.
