German, 69, was called fearless by his colleagues at the news outlet where he had worked for over ten years. He joined the Review-Journal as a crime reporter after two decades at the Las Vegas Sun.

Telles is a Democrat who failed to get reelected after German wrote a series of pieces on him that exposed a “toxic” work environment in his office and an affair with an employee.  Allegations included “emotional stress, bullying, and favoritism that led to secret videotaping of the boss and a co-worker outside the office.”

Police reportedly searched Telles’ home hours before he was arrested, taking his clothes and numerous items. At approximately 6 pm on Wednesday, the police returned to the home decked out in tactical gear, surrounding the residence with Telles inside. Approximately 30 minutes later, he was wheeled out of the home on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The Daily Mail is reporting that Telles had raged about German for months. He reportedly posted a number of angry messages on social media accusing the reporter of going through his trash and writing “lying smear pieces” about him.

On Telles’ campaign website, a section called “Truth” slammed German, calling him out by name and accusing him of conspiring with his challenger in the Democratic primary for the post of Clark County Public Administrator, Rita Reid, to publish false stories about him.

Reid beat Telles in the June 16 election. She was one of the individuals who complained about his behavior at work and his alleged affair with Roberta Lee-Kennett, 45, a staffer in the office.

Telles’ paranoia ran deep evidently. He also accused German and Reid of conspiring with John Cahill who was his predecessor. He asserted that the three of them were attempting to “drag me through the mud.”

Three days before he lost the primary, Telles wrote, “If Rita does not win, then her position will not be vacated.”

“Then, the employee who wanted her position will not get it. This person wanted to work in that position for three years to obtain a much higher monthly payment in retirement,” he threatened. “For that reason, Jeff German and John Cahill may not be done trying to drag me through the mud.”

“To ensure that Democrats rally around Rita, they would have to turn most Democratic voters against me even now when I should be irrelevant. Don’t be surprised if the articles keep coming,” he stated. “Through all of these articles, I have had the support of my family and friends.”

“Despite what Jeff German and John Cahill have tried to do to me personally, I have been backed up by love and support that helped me to keep fighting for re-election. While I have lost, I still yet have that love and support,” he proclaimed.

He went on a Twitter rant the day before the murder, accusing German of once again sifting through his trash, making a “veiled threat,” and bullying him.

“Looking forward to lying smear piece #4 by @JGermanRJ #onetrickpony. I think he’s mad I haven’t crawled into a hole and died,” he wrote. “Typical bully. Can’t take a pound of criticism after slinging 100 pounds of BS. Up to article #4 now. You’d think he’d have better things to do.”

Telles quipped he expected to also be connected to the Mob and Yakuza after leaving pizza and sushi boxes in the trash.

“*Wife hears rustling in the trash* Her: ‘Honey, is there a wild animal in the trash?’ Me: ‘No, dear. Looks like it’s @JGermanRJ going through our trash for his 4th story on me.’ Oh, Jeff…” he tweeted.

The murder suspect lives in Peccole Ranch in a $660,000 four-bedroom home with his wife Mae Ishmael, 45, and their three young children. The house was raided early Wednesday morning by police.

Video footage of a suspect in a wide-brimmed hat, gloves, and clothing meant to apparently disguise someone as a woman surfaced which was linked to Telles. Police also released footage of a maroon 2007 to 2013 GMC Yukon Denali in connection to the case. A similar vehicle was removed from the Telles’ home, along with a gray BMW sedan.

“The arrest of Robert Telles is at once an enormous relief and an outrage for the Review-Journal newsroom,” Las Vegas Review-Journal Executive Editor Glenn Cook said in a statement. “We are relieved Telles is in custody and outraged that a colleague appears to have been killed for reporting on an elected official. Journalists can’t do the important work our communities require if they are afraid a presentation of facts could lead to violent retribution. We thank Las Vegas police for their urgency and hard work and for immediately recognizing the terrible significance of Jeff’s killing. Now, hopefully, the Review-Journal, the German family and Jeff’s many friends can begin the process of mourning and honoring a great man and a brave reporter.”
