Despite all evidence to the contrary, NYT’s Maggie Haberman claims Trump ‘fears’ DOJ probe

Corporate media is ever so fond of rolling out “experts” to pontificate on matters they couldn’t possibly speak to with certainty and the latest such instance had one New York Times correspondent positive that former President Donald Trump is planning his next moves in fear of investigations.

On Friday’s edition of “Anderson Cooper 360,” Jim Sciutto filled in as host and brought on Times writer and CNN analyst Maggie Haberman to opine on Trump’s 2024 aspirations and how the Jan. 6 committee and Department of Justice might influence his decision-making.

Sciutto asked, “Do the ongoing prosecutions, both Jan. 6 committee, but more notably, the DOJ possible criminal prosecution–is that a factor? I mean, you’ve heard theorizing that he wants to run because he thinks that would head off potential criminal charges, indictments?”

Haberman, who at one time was dubbed “MAGA” Haberman because of her “friendly” coverage of Trump replied, “Yes, I believe it is based on my reporting. Yes. I mean, you know, this is something that he has alluded to, in some conversations. You know, he tries to project confidence about–at least about the DOJ investigation.”

“You know, he has openly talked more worriedly about the Georgia investigation in Fulton County, into his actions in that state,” she claimed before adding, “However, Donald Trump fears investigations, generally speaking, and the fact that the DOJ is now calling in witnesses from the White House only ups the level of concern.”

Much like their coverage of the “bombshell” testimony of former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson where the network compounded hearsay to corroborate the claims made before the Jan. 6 committee, CNN did not bother to question Haberman on specifics that could support this notion of worried talk from Trump.

However, worse than that fact was only a moment earlier, the analyst had insisted that there was only one driving force behind the president’s motivation to take another shot at being commander-in-chief.

The host had asked, “It has been a good week for the former president in several of these primaries, in a number of states. What is your sense of what he believes he gains from these endorsements and speeches? And do you believe–and you’ve been covering him longer than anyone–this is building up to another presidential run?”

“The honest answer, Jim,” she began, “is what he gains from it is attention and people talking about him as we are and as other people are, and that’s how he looks at this.”

After mentioning the specific endorsement of Tudor Dixon in the race for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in Michigan to face incumbent Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) and the hotly-contested primary between AG Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) and former Gov. Eric Greitens (R-Mo.) for the Senate nomination where Trump had backed, “Eric,” she arrived at the conclusion that, “the second that he says that he is not running, you know, the crown in the Republican Party goes to somebody else.”

“And I think it’s as simple as that,” Haberman stated of the president’s desire to run again.

Meanwhile, speaking at a “Save America” rally later that night in Waukesha, Wisc., Trump offered a completely different take on the situation as he slammed progressives and their allies for constantly going after him and making him “the most persecuted person in the history of our country,” for all the witch hunts.

“If I renounce my beliefs, if I agree to stay silent, if I stayed home, or if I stayed in my basement like Joe Biden did, the persecution would stop immediately,” Trump stated. “That’s what they want me to do, and it would all be very nice. I’d have a very nice life. But I can’t do that, and I will not do that, because I love our country and the people of our country. I love them so much.”

“And I’m not doing this for me because I had a very good and luxurious life before entering the wonderful world of politics. I’m doing this for you, and it’s my honor to do it,” he concluded, despite Haberman’s claims.
