A former federal prosecutor says that the investigation into Hunter Biden has reached a critical phase after the grand jury disbanded without preferring charges.
The 52-year-old younger son of President Joe Biden has been under investigation in Delaware for several years now, with allegations hanging over his head of lying on the purchase of a firearm, among others. The investigation began before Biden entered the White House, and the investigator in charge of the case, US Attorney for Delaware David Weiss, has so far been kept at his post in order to avoid claims of corruption and conflict of interest.
Nevertheless, former US Attorney for Utah Brett Tolman told Fox News that there’s something very strange about the current status of the case.
“None of this adds up,” he said. “None of it makes sense. Indictments should have been brought when you first started calling witnesses and close thereto, that’s standard.
“The fact that a grand jury is now terminating here fairly soon or has terminated, in essence, you have to start all over. If the new grand jury gets empaneled, you have to re-present all the evidence that you may have presented.”
According to Tolman, that’s not the standard operating procedure when it comes to grand juries. Normally, he explained, charges or at the very least the threat of charges would have been brought before the first grand jury was disbanded. Among other things, the prosecutors in the case could have used the threat charges over claims that Biden lied on a federal gun purchase form.
Allegedly, he lied when asked whether he was an “unlawful user of or addicted to” an assortment of controlled substances on the form. And that’s the least of Biden’s worries, with the investigation looking into a host of other bad behavior: including tax violations, false statements, and violations of foreign lobbying laws.
“[I]t’s not adding up,” Tolman said. “It’s certainly not what I would have done. And it’s not what the majority of my colleagues who served as U.S. attorneys and assistant U.S. attorneys would have done in this case.
“Anybody who wanted to seek justice in this case would have charged Hunter Biden very quickly. You would have threatened distribution of narcotics and possession of firearms–which carry lengthy prison sentences.” Much more importantly, Tolman suggested that prosecutors could have pressured Biden to become a source for investigating the allegations that his father, the president, was involved in his foreign business dealings.
Doubtless, if this were happening to former President Donald Trump, all these “bombshells” would long ago have led to “the walls” closing in on the president, and he probably would have been hauled off to prison by heavily-armed federal stormtroopers by now. But, this being the Biden administration, nothing of the sort is likely to happen anytime soon.
“I mean, this is so simple and so basic that the only conclusion I can make is political games are being played and have from the very beginning,” Tolman observed.
“There’s just so much that this is the equivalent of a softball being floated and you have an extremely large bat.”
