Now that they can no longer count on the United States Supreme Court to enforce their unpopular laws around the country, Democratic politicians in Congress are planning to hold a number of votes that aim to legalize same-sex marriage, abortion access, and contraceptive services across the country.
According to Fox News Digital, the move is widely seen as a response to the Supreme Court’s overturning of the longstanding Roe v. Wade decision, which for half a century had held that abortion was a constitutionally protected right. The Court’s anticipated ruling was finally handed down last month in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case, in which abortion decisions were now returned to the states.
The issue of abortion now lies with each state, an eminently democratic solution that should be welcomed enthusiastically by the Democratic Party—which touts itself as the self-appointed defenders of “Our Democracy.” The reality, of course, has been far different, as leftists have condemned the very same court that undemocratically imposed abortion and same-sex marriage on the country. The Democrats have come too late to the unpleasant realization that what the Court giveth, the Court can taketh away.
“As this Court may take aim at other fundamental rights, we cannot sit idly by,” New York representative Jerrold Nadler, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, explained in a statement about the upcoming votes.

Now comes the difficult part of trying to win widespread support for new laws, which is what democracy is really all about. Had the Democrats done this work beforehand, rather than relying upon the Supreme Court to impose their ideology on the rest of the nation, they wouldn’t have found themselves in this position.
The votes, after all, are a desperate response to a shot across the bow delivered by Justice Clarence Thomas during his concurring opinion in the Dobbs case, in which he wrote “…in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell…After overruling these demonstrably erroneous decisions, the question would remain whether other constitutional provisions guarantee the myriad rights that our substantive due process cases have generated.”
This despite Justice Samuel Alito stressing that the majority’s decision that “the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion” is exclusive to that matter alone and that the ruling “concerns the constitutional right to abortion and no other right.”
The Democrats have scheduled a vote on the “Respect for Marriage Act,” an amendment to the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996, and is intended largely to put Democrat and Republican legislators on record concerning same-sex marriage. The Defense of Marriage Act codified marriage as a heterogeneous relationship between a man and a woman, which is obviously unacceptable since Democrats are incapable of even defining what men and women are—until the issue of abortion comes up, whereupon Democrats become staunch defenders of womankind.
With the Respect for Marriage Act, Democrats hope to codify same-sex marriage into law, as well as prevent states from denying marriage licenses on the basis of the “sex, race, ethnicity or national origin of the individuals in the marriage.” Another vote concerning “contraceptive care” is scheduled to be held later in the week.
