Why Tucker’s piece on ‘Brazilian Trump’ President Bolsonaro is so important to Americans

Tucker Carlson is in beautiful Brazil this week, where he has been hosting his show as he showcases the political situation in that South American country—and highlights its close parallels with the deteriorating conditions in the United States.

On Wednesday, Carlson teased his interview with Brazil’s right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro, a man who’s made a name for himself as a kind of Brazilian Trump, and has therefore drawn the ire of the international Left upon himself.

Bolsonaro didn’t exactly do himself any favors when he questioned the legitimacy of Biden’s election, even though he was good enough to attend the recent, farcical “Summit of the Americas”—which most of the leftist leaders in Central and South America skipped altogether, demonstrating their unmitigated disdain for America’s current leftist leader.

Bolsonaro is up for reelection, and the international media has gone to great lengths to paint him as an “authoritarian” figure—much like the hated Victor Orbán of Hungary, or even the current Emmanuel-Goldstein-of-the-hour, Vladimir Putin. They’ve also accused him of rewriting Brazil’s election laws and undermining democratic norms—in other words, the same things the left has profitably done in the United States and elsewhere around the world.

“The parallels between politics in Brazil and politics in the United States are striking to an American,” Carlson told Bolsonaro in the clip of his interview. “You are opposed by a coalition of billionaires, college professors, and CNN. Tell us what the opposition wants. What will Brazil look like if your opponent wins?”

“My election itself was almost a miracle,” he replied. “I had nothing going for me; I was just an isolated member of congress.”

Bolsonaro then described a scenario that is, indeed, very familiar to many Americans.

“The media never gave me any visibility or space,” he said. “Much to the contrary, they attacked me all the time throughout the campaign. If the left-wing does come back to power, to my view, they’ll never leave power and this country will follow the same path as Venezuela, Argentina, Chile, Colombia. Brazil will become one more wagon on that train.”

Bolsonaro might have added the United States to that list of countries in which the left is rapidly consolidating power and eroding democratic systems.

“The losers will be the Brazilian population and also the left-wing itself. The left-wing voters will lose as a result. All of South America will be colored red, if you understand me. And in my view, the United States will become virtually an isolated country in the world.”

“This will shock you,” Carlson said, after showing the brief clip. “Bolsonaro bears no resemblance whatsoever to the descriptions of Bolsonaro you have read in The New York Times. Completely different person. Seen that before?”

It’s an interesting point, because any casual search of Bolsonaro on Google, or any other search engine for that matter, returns a litany of left-wing hit pieces against the Brazilian president.

The liberal media will doubtless entertain another fit of hysteria over Carlson’s visit to Brazil, just as they did when he went to Hungary and spoke with Orbán, but it is refreshing to have a different perspective on the world unclouded by the tiresome biases of the legacy media.
