There’s nothing pleasant about air travel these days.
It’s stressful, expensive, and uncomfortable in just about every way. To top it all off, the in-flight meals—such as they are—are terrible. It’s enough to give anyone a heart attack.
Unfortunately for one woman, this is allegedly what happened to her on Friday at an airport in North Carolina, amid what’s shaping up to be a thoroughly chaotic travel situation in the United States. At least that’s according to a worried mom, who explained Sunday on Twitter the travails experienced by her 17-year-old son at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport over the weekend.
All this came amid a flurry of canceled and delayed flights at the airport. On Friday, the woman’s son was trying to make his connection to Raleigh-Durham International Airport, but instead experienced a disconcerting array of canceled flights and last-minute gate changes—which is enough to give the stoutest heart a palpitation or two.
Evidently, it was all too much for one poor woman. According to the concerned mom, the harried traveler “had a heart attack in front of [her son] after running to a new gate.”

As if that wasn’t bad enough, the teenage son then had to spend several hours on the plane only for it to be canceled.
My 17yo son was there that day trying to make his connection to RDU.Multiple last min gate changes, 2 cancelled flights, woman had a heart attack in front of him after running to a new gate, hours stuck on plane only to have it cancelled. I drove over 350 miles to get him home.

And we still don’t have his checked bag. Going to have to drive back to RDU to pick it up since they won’t pick up a phone or call me back.

“Drove over 350 miles yesterday through a bad storm, 2 gas stops (ouch) to pick up my son at CLT after he was deserted there,” the woman tweeted. No word on what happened to the poor woman who suffered cardiac arrest trying to make her connection. Presumably, she didn’t make the flight.
The drama at Charlotte-Douglas was more or less replicated across the nation over the weekend, according to Daily Mail. Over 900 flights were canceled on Sunday, which ended up stranding travelers and leading to the cancelation of over 200 routes for Monday. Even those who are fortunate enough to actually get on a plane and make it to their destination are experiencing inordinate delays—including having to wait an hour or more on the tarmac before deplaning.
The chaos and disarray at airports have been an ongoing feature ever since the surge in summer travel began, and airlines cite staffing shortages amid the spate of COVID-related layoffs last year due to the Biden administration’s ill-considered vaccine requirements. Meanwhile, air travel, according to the Transportation Security Administration, has almost reached pre-pandemic levels, and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg’s solution is to admonish the airlines to get their act together.
Bottom line: Perhaps expect to see a rise in heart attacks at airports over the next few months.
