Nearly a month has passed since an 18-year-old suspect entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX where 19 children and two teachers were murdered. Since that time, public perception regarding the response from law enforcement to the scene has only worsened and the latest report on what surveillance footage revealed is bound to worsen those sentiments.
With at least three separate active investigations related to the tragedy, details continue to trickle in and a new report has alleged surveillance footage proves law enforcement officials hadn’t even tried to enter the classroom the suspect occupied and he “could not have locked the door” to the adjacent room. The San Antonio Express-News spoke with a source in law enforcement close to the investigation who reported on these latest findings.
The Express-News detailed, “Surveillance footage shows that police never tried to open a door to two classrooms at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde in the 77 minutes between the time a gunman entered the rooms and massacred 21 people and officers finally breached the door and killed him.”
The outlet went on to explain how investigators contend the suspect “could not have locked the door to the connected classrooms from the inside…All classroom doors at Robb Elementary are designed to lock automatically when they close and can only be locked or unlocked from the outside with a key.”
As the suspect was able to enter classroom 111, it is believed the lock may have malfunctioned like that of the exterior door which was said to be how he was able to get inside the school in the first place. While the functionality of the classroom lock remains under investigation, surveillance footage reportedly shows members of law enforcement had not attempted to open the door, or the door of the connected room which would have allowed another possible point of entry to subdue the suspect.
Furthermore, while it has been reported that Uvalde School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo had been attempting to locate the key to the door, the Express-News reported that law enforcement had a Halligan tool available the entire time. A Halligan tool is a large crowbar-like device commonly used for forced entry by first responders.

The story from Express-News comes following a report that at least one officer of the Uvalde Police Department may have had an opportunity to fire at the suspect prior to gaining entry to the school, but was said to have hesitated out of concern for the safety of children within his line of sight.
These details have come as part of independent investigations being conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety with the assistance of the Texas Rangers, The U.S. Justice Department and a committee of the Texas state Legislature.
The three person Texas House Investigative Committee is being headed by State Rep. Dustin Burrows (R) who is joined by State Rep. Joe Moody (D) and former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman. While many have grown frustrated with the conflicting reports provided by officials, Burrows has attempted to maintain the integrity of his investigation by waiting until all information has been collected before the release of any findings.

He added, “I’m not telling you this is the perfect way to go about doing it, by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s the way we know that we feel works and we believe in it.”
