While Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) has been summarily panned all week by conservatives since announcing a bipartisan compromise on gun legislation that could erode due process in the United States, his shame tour began in earnest Friday when he appeared at the annual Texas Republican Convention in Houston where he received the welcome you’d expect.
Fox News host Tucker Carlson, a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, had been railing against the Senate’s measures that would lead to the imposition of red flag laws throughout the week on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.” After previously discussing the “problematic” laws that would lead to mass gun confiscation in an attempt to prevent crimes that had not been committed, the host drew attention to Cornyn’s reception in his home state.
Citing a primary reason that gun owners vote Republican is their desire to keep their firearms, Carlson stated, “it’s not surprising that John Cornyn is very unpopular with Republican voters. Watch his reception today at the Texas Republican Convention. Listen for the boos.”
Well, sounds like Texas Republicans aren’t a fan of Cornyn’s anti-2A bill

The negative reaction, which included chants of “go back home,” took place throughout the speech where Cornyn attempted to assert he was still protecting their rights. He argued, “Democrats pushed for an assault weapons ban, I said no. They tried to get a new three-week mandatory waiting period for all gun purchases, I said no. Universal background checks, magazine bans, licensing requirements, the list goes on and on and on. And I said no, no, 1,000 times no.”
“I will not, under any circumstance, support new restrictions for law-abiding gun owners,” he later added. “That will always be my red line.”
Of course, using doublespeak that establishment politicians are loathed for, Cornyn can tout with sincerity his opposition to “new restrictions” because a confiscation under potential red flag laws is another thing entirely.
Carlson pointed out, “Prosecutors across the country are refusing to enforce laws that we already have and when you do that, crime spikes. So, if you’re in the United States Senate, if you’re John Cornyn from Texas, supposedly a free state of Texas, you’d probably want to do something about that. But no, John Cornyn has decided to take guns from lawful gun owners, and if there’s one reason you vote Republican, it’s to prevent that.”
The host also explained, “The amazing thing about John Cornyn is he admits he doesn’t care about gun crimes committed by actual criminals. We know this from a piece in Axios, and we’re quoting: ‘Senator John Kennedy asked Cornyn during one lunch, “Are we focused on gang violence in inner-city murders?” And the response was, “No, we’re not focusing on that.”‘”
Whether the RINOs of the party will get away with promoting these kinds of violations of the Constitution remains up to the pressures applied by their constituents. Republicans of the Lone Star State who proudly display the Gonzales Flag flown during the War of Texas Independence, emblazoned with the slogan “Come And Take It,” decided they will not stand by quietly while the Bill of Rights is eroded and issued a resolution that backed their jeering of Cornyn.
On Thursday, as reported by Texas Scorecard, the Republican Party of Texas’ Platform Committee issued a resolution unanimously condemning Cornyn and his fellow Republican senators for their compromise writing: “Whereas those under 21 are most likely to be victims of violent crime and thus most likely to need to defend themselves. Whereas ‘red flag laws’ violate one’s right to due process and are a pre-crime punishment of people not adjudicated guilty. Whereas waiting periods on gun purchases harm those who need to acquire the means of self defense in emergencies such as riots. Whereas all gun control is a violation of the Second Amendment and our God given rights. We reject the so called ‘bipartisan gun agreement’, and we rebuke Senators John Cornyn (R-Texas), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.).”
