Under new leadership, viewers of CNN were promised that the “next chapter” for the corporate media outlet would be aimed at “reflecting” their “real lives.” On Tuesday it appeared the network may be working at fulfilling that promise and it doesn’t bode well for President Joe Biden.
It’s no secret that Biden is facing staggeringly high disapproval ratings after his policies have led to worsening inflation and record-setting gas prices. However, it’s become par for the course when a story doesn’t track well for Democrats for their allies in the media to soften the blow with spin or choose not to cover it at all, as happened with the Sunday shows ignoring the assassination attempt of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Lately, a trend toward authentic journalism has emerged at CNN with the appearances of their senior data reporter Harry Enten who has dispensed with the kid gloves so often used to protect the image of the left. When asked by Anderson Cooper Tuesday about how bad inflation was, he didn’t hold back stating, “It’s awful…and how people feel about it is even worse.”

“You look at the consumer sentiment right now and what do you see? This is the worst consumer sentiment ever measured by the University of Michigan going all the way back since 1952,” he went on before highlighting that the second and third-worst measurements were taken in May and April of 1980 respectively.
“I don’t have to remind you inflation got Jimmy Carter – it killed that presidency,” Enten stated. For reference, President Jimmy Carter lost his reelection campaign in 1980 to then-former Gov. Ronald Reagan (R-Calif.) by an electoral landslide of 489-49.

Enten continued explaining why voters are feeling the way they are, saying, “it’s pretty clear why they’re feeling this bad and that is because the consumer price index is the worst it’s ever been in a midterm cycle since ’74, it’s the worst it’s been in any presidential cycle or midterm cycle since 1980.”
The data reporter had reported similar sentiments in April when he said, “The voters know exactly what’s going on. They’re not stupid. 86% say inflation,” is why the economy is bad.

As CNN’s new president Chris Licht expressed, “The next chapter in CNN is one where we aspire to be a beacon for the kind of journalism essential to a functioning democracy. At a time where extremes are dominating cable news, we will seek to go a different way reflecting the real lives of our viewers and elevating the way America and the world views this medium.”
It appeared Cooper fulfilled that promise when he next asked, “How does President Biden’s performance rate?”
“Awful,” Enten stated which even drew a smirk from the host before he went on to compare the disapproval of Biden at 71 percent versus Carter in the middle of 1978 at 66 percent according to a Gallup poll.”
“When you’re doing worse than Jimmy Carter’s doing in the minds of Americans on inflation you know that they’re holding you responsible,” the data reporter added.
CNN: Americans say inflation is their most important issue, and they overwhelmingly trust Republicans more on inflation than Democrats.

The conversation then went on to present favorability for Republicans when Cooper asked, “Which party do voters trust more right now?”
Jesting that the segment might as well be called “the not surprised segment” Enten said pointedly, “The Republican Party. They much more trust the Republican Party by 20 points,” when specifically discussing inflation.
Cooper reiterated Enten’s earlier point and said, “Obviously for Democrats any comparison to Jimmy Carter at this stage for President Biden, it’s not a great comparison there.”
The data reporter then shared polling that depicted the economy far ahead of any other issue as the number one concern for voters at 48 percent, with gun violence trailing with 17 percent of voters considering it the top priority, despite the media and Congress continuing to place focus there.
“Here I think is the big takeaway,” Enten summarized, showing a record of voting cycles that tracked back to 1938. “When you look at the generic congressional ballot…this is the best Republican position…basically of all time.”
That is hardly a sentiment that would have been expressed under the old CNN management.
