‘Woke’ Natl. Park Service renames Yellowstone’s Mount Doane as First Peoples Mountain

The woke agenda proved once again that their selective reverence of legacies is actually a disdain for history with the latest victim of the culture war coming in the form of a rebrand for a famous landmark.

On Wednesday, the National Park Service (NPS) announced that, as part of the 150th anniversary of Yellowstone National Park, they would be scrubbing the name of a leader of the first expedition to explore the area from its landscape. Henceforth, Mount Doane will be known as First Peoples Mountain.

As part of the release, NPS explained the action was “taken to remove offensive name from America’s first national park.”

The park service explained that the decision to rename the 10,551-foot peak was not made arbitrarily.

“Yellowstone conducted outreach to all 27 associated Tribes over the past several months and received no opposition to the change nor concerns,” the agency said.

In their release, NPS oversimplifies the history of the original name explaining, “The peak was previously named after Gustavus Doane, a key member of the Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition in 1879 prior to Yellowstone becoming America’s first national park.”

They choose to keep the emphasis on the slights committed by Doane writing, “Research has show that earlier that same year, Doane led an attack, in response to the alleged murder of a white fur trader, on a band of Piegan Blackfeet. During what is now known as the Marias Massacre, at least 173 American Indians were killed, including many women, elderly Tribal members and children suffering from smallpox.”

“Doane wrote fondly about this attack and bragged about it for the rest of his life,” the statement claimed.

However, they failed to acknowledge the achievements that Lieutenant Doane, who would later in life obtain the rank of captain, made during the expedition that they feature prominently elsewhere on the website.

“His report to Gen. Winfield S. Hancock is very likely the finest account of the trip presented by any member of the party so far as the general reader is concerned,” NPS recounted in a history of the expedition. “Doctor Hayden in his preliminary report, a year later, refers to ‘the remarkable report of this young officer, which he seems to have written under the inspiration of the wonderful physical phenomena around him.’ He further states it as his opinion, ‘that for graphic descriptions and thrilling interest it has not been surpassed by any official report made to our Government since the time of Lewis and Clark.'”

According to Montana State University, which compiled a collection of papers from Doane, he would also go on to unsuccessfully attempt to earn the position of superintendent of Yellowstone National Park near the end of his life. As with many historical figures, when viewed through a modern perspective offenses are exponentially worse than they would have been perceived at the time.

However, the push to only see the worst in America history has persisted and, in this case, this renaming was the completion of a four-year push from The Great Plains Tribal Chairman’s Association, according to The Daily Mail. They originally demanded the name change in 2018.

Piikani Nation Chief Stan Grier stated, “This name change is long overdue. We all agreed on ‘First Peoples’ Mountain’ as an appropriate name to honor the victims of such inhumane acts of genocide, and to also remind people of the 10,000-year-plus connection tribal peoples have to this sacred place now called Yellowstone.”

President Barack Obama had made a similar move in 2015 when he renamed Mount McKinley, named in honor of President William McKinley, Denali. Unlike the case of the newly dubbed First Peoples Mountain, Denali was actually the name of Mount McKinley prior to 1917.

More actions like this are sure to come as NPS concluded their statement, “Yellowstone may consider changes to other derogatory or inappropriate names in the future.”
