Grandfather throws down with aggressive kangaroo that attacked his dogs, but who really won?

An Australian man put his boxing skills to the test against an unusual opponent, an “aggressive” kangaroo that was trying to attack his beloved dogs.

Cliff Dess, a grandfather who is a former MMA trainer, told 9 News Australia about his encounter with what he called a “six-foot mad roo,” that he wrestled to the ground at one point after it was threatening his dogs.

“Can’t stand up and fight it because it had too many sharp instruments,” Dess told the outlet, recounting how he was “whacking” the animal with a stick to “keep it at bay.”

With his fenced dogs barking away, the 59-year-old went at it with the feisty roo but admitted that it wasn’t an easy battle with the animal being “in an aggressive mood.”

Recounting how “he put his claws up and started chasing me,” Dess said ultimately, “I fought it off with a stick,” and “took it to the ground,” since that was “the only way I could deal with it.”

In the six-minute brawl, the former boxer said the animal bit his finger and “gouged me on the top of the head.”

The kangaroo apparently did not sustain any injuries, though Dess said it continued to try to get at his dogs for another 20 minutes afterward.

“Sometimes kangaroos move into backyards or onto private property to feed. Stop this by fencing and removing sources of food or water that attract kangaroos,” according to the Queensland government website.

“If you are approached by an aggressive kangaroo you should keep it at a safe distance so that it can’t kick or scratch. For example, hold up a stick or a branch, or stay behind a fence or a tree. Move away from the animal as quickly as you can,” the site continues, in advice that clearly would not have been helpful to Dess.
