Blaming mental health for mass shooting ‘intentionally disingenuous’, insults people with mental issues, expert says

The left has produced an expert who squarely blames the Uvalde massacre on guns, not on the mental health shortcomings of the psychotic killer who brutally and mercilessly took the lives of 19 children and two teachers.

Dr. Joel Dvoskin, a clinical psychologist at the Washington D.C.-based American Psychological Association, asserts that blaming mental health problems for mass shootings such as the Uvalde tragedy is “intentionally disingenuous” and “insulting” to those suffering from those sorts of conditions.

Dvoskin is reportedly a self-proclaimed gun control expert who says that the blame for the massacre should be leveled at access to guns, stalled gun regulation reforms, and stress events that could potentially trigger such an event.

As mass shootings capture headlines across the nation following not only the Texas shooting, but others in Philadelphia, Maryland, and Chicago, the left is going full bore against guns.

Instead of addressing the root cause of the tragedies, which lies with the twisted individuals who commit them, so-called physicians, psychiatrists, and other leading experts are being trotted out who are attempting to make it all about guns.

“There is no ‘the mentally ill.’ It’s all of us. It’s our kids, our families, our uncles, our cousins,” Dvoskin claimed.

“The notion of blaming this on the mentally ill is an intentionally disingenuous scapegoating of people who have enough problems already,” Dvoskin commented when asked about the shooting in Texas by ABC News. “They don’t need to be insulted by politicians who were looking for a way to avoid a more complicated discussion.”

“Very few of these mass shooters have had a diagnosed mental disorder of any kind,” he claimed.

“That doesn’t mean that they were doing fine. I think the better rhetoric to use [instead of] mentally ill is people who are in crisis,” Dvoskin contended. “Anybody who’s in a crisis of despair or rage… that doesn’t mean they’re going to shoot anybody but they ought to get help.”

“When you blame mass homicides on mentally ill, all you’re doing is dramatically increasing stigma. People don’t want to join the group of people who are responsible for harm,” the psychologist said.

“Those statements not only are wrong but they are directly harmful to citizens who might be struggling with a mental illness, but they haven’t asked for help, and why would they when we stigmatize it so drastically,” he alleged.

Official statistics from 2018 reportedly indicate that from 2000 to 2013, roughly 25 percent of mass shooters had a diagnosed mental health problem. Since many of the shooters were not under a doctor’s care, their mental health issues were likely not caught before they committed their crimes.

The 18-year-old shooter in Uvalde, Texas, Salvador Ramos, had no history of diagnosed mental health illness or a criminal background. His mother’s boyfriend described Ramos as a “loner” who would stay in his room, hitting a punching bag and refusing to allow anyone into the house. It is also being reported that he was violent towards women and was threatening on social media. By all apparent counts, the boy was not mentally stable.

Governor Greg Abbott (R-Texas), as well as the mayor of Uvalde, Don McLaughlin, both, have stated they believe that mental health issues were involved in the massacre.

“We have a problem with mental health illness in this community,” Abbott charged.

“Maybe we could have caught it,” McLaughlin said. “Maybe if we had the counselors, maybe if we had the mental health people, we could do it.”

President Joe Biden is calling for expanded gun control in the wake of the massacre. He started politicizing the school deaths just hours after the shooting, asserting that it is time to “turn pain into action,” and proclaiming, “When in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby?”

Texas Senator Ted Cruz has pushed back at the leftist cries for further gun control. Stating that “targeting the fugitives and the felons and the bad guys” rather than the Constitutional right to bear arms is the key to reducing violence and deadly events such as the one in Uvalde.

  1. Any mass shooter is a psychopath. Nuf said. This doctor is full of it and has an agenda.

  2. Dvoskin is playing a fool. Thousands of gun owners are responsible law bidding citizens who don’t go to schools and start shooting kid’s. The absence of a conscience and rational would be more likely to exist with people suffering from mental illness. Dvoskin is claiming all gun owners are mentally incompetent and should no longer have the right to have a gun. His argument makes no sense!

  3. Watched the Highwire and a good point being made. Why do they not bring up Big Pharma’s role in atrosities. We’ve seen the damage their medications have and can do.. has he or was he on meds? Keep the people divided and leave out the evils. Have we already forgot the past. The drug experiments they did during the holocost on prisoners, have we already forgotten: The Standard Gravure shooting occurred on September 14, 1989, in Louisville, Kentucky, when Joseph T. Wesbecker, a 47-year-old pressman, killed eight people and injured twelve at his former workplace, before committing suicide. The shooting is the deadliest mass shooting in Kentucky’s history. The murders resulted in a high-profile lawsuit against Eli Lilly and Company ..The shooting of Parkland students:As information about a “perpetrator emerges, a relative confides to a newspaper that the ‘troubled youth’ who committed the mass murder was on psychiatric medications — you know, those powerful, little understood, mind-altering drugs with fearsome side effects including ‘suicidal ideation’ and even ‘homicidal ideation.’” Now we see a hard hit on gun protections from these people and relaxing laws to give and legalize more drugs. This is a no win for all people. Too many people blindsided by more lies to disarm people for a NWO goal.

    1. Before we go there, yes I spelled holocaust wrong, please forgive me:) the outcome is the same.

  4. The moral decline of this nation (and in the world) is a direct contributor to the rise in violent crime, not gun access. We have lowered the consequences for violent acts; taught our children that they are no more than higher animals, pushed the idea of “Me first,” creating a very selfish attitude among our youth; and we have given people dozens of excuses for their actions, which they can now use to rationalize a behavior which would once been unthinkable. We have planted the seeds for violent behavior and are now reaping the harvest. We were told the seeds were good things and would make our people “feel better,” Look at it this way, some feel better when they get drunk but, the next morning, they reap the consequences.

It is now a mental health problem, regardless of what the self proclaimed experts say. At age 79, I have seen the decline in our national values and in our failure to deal with mental health. It is not a disgrace to those who are suffering from recognized mental health problems to say it is mental health. It is a disgrace to the, so called, professionals in the mental health field who propagate the very attitudes which lead to the violence in the first place.

  5. Maybe we should consider returning to the mental institutions of the past to hold those deemed to be violent Family friends and acquaintences should report threats made of violence and law enforcement should do an immediate follow up with appropiate action to follow quickly. A gun is an inanimate object until held in a hand of a killer.

  6. So if shooting and killing people is NOT a Mental Illness then no one should be allowed to claim Insanity or Diminished Capacity when being charged with Murder. A verdict of Guilty woudl be the Death Penalty, that seems fair to me. You Cannot have it both ways, if a mass shooting is not Mental Illness then neither is a killing under any other circumstances.

  7. Just like calling lying leftists, bull sh-tters, is an insult to all feces.

  8. The fact is that these mass murderers are mentally ill but they are the only mentally ill people directly responsible. The vast majority of those suffering from it are innocent.

  9. Seeing as liberalism is a mental illness, we have that to contend with in every city, every day. But he’s right, the “mass shootings” and the daily murders in NYC, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Houston, Minneapolis, Waukesha, et al are not caused by mentally ill people, they are caused by EVIL people!

  10. Gee, all those Muslims who have committed mass shootings (e.g. the guy at Fort Hood) were ‘mentally ill’ – remember?

  11. I have little to no regard for the opinions of “Mental Health” professionals, as most that I have me are clearly mentally ill.
I’m guessing that many are aware of “Medical Student Syndrome”, wherein they imagine, even experience the symptoms of diseases they study. Why would the study of psychological disorders be any different, more so actually, as after all, its all in the mind!To use a clinical term, clearly that kid is a whack job, we are talking cuckoo-for-cocoa-puffs, padded room for life, batshit crazy!

  12. If the leftists had their way, guns would be in jail so they could no longer go to schools to kill people.

  13. Why not? We can blame cars for drunken driver accidents and take the stairs to task for Biden’s stumbles.
    God do I love satire!

  14. We swing from “it’s not their fault, they can’t help it, they are mentally ill” to “It is insulting to say a mental health issue caused him to shoot 19 children and 2 adults.”

Let the tragedy fit the narrative.

Everyone I know tortures cats and puts their bodies in a bag to carry around with them; what could be more sane than that!?!

  15. This is what happens when ‘doctors’ are just as crazy as ‘the patients’… If not more dangerous. The AMA is a joke now. Hell, even PhDs are a joke now. I feel sorry for the ones that actually earned them…

  16. Dvoskin and those like him are the issue, they are the ones that fail to address the issue of putting blame and fault where it is due…on the perpetrator!

    1. Sane people do not kill people without it being in self defense and we certainly do not participate in mass shootings! Someone has to be mentally ill to kill numerous children at a school.

  17. I read a medical online pub. Some loser psychiatrist made this same argument. The comment section was filled with comments from other docs pushing back and asserting that mental derangement WAS part of the picture.

  18. That headline just made me laugh. Insulting to people with mental health issues….. AWWW too bad. Truth hurts at times. Mental Health problems are WHY these boys seem to choose to commit murder. Each one has a background of hurting other people, and animals, resisting authority, anger issues, and alienation from society from childhood.

  19. What expert is what I need to know! I stand with Don Jr. and his comments about what really happened, what NEEDS to be said about the actions of Ramos. It is the problem of the Parents, the teachers, the Grandparents, the neighbors, those that KNEW there was something wrong with that child and never reported him to the authorities!
Making more Gun Laws is ridiculous. Anyone with intelligence knows any gun Cannot pull the trigger itself. This child is proof that the mentally ill are the reasons that the United States has so many savage shootings. Using these shootings to push Gun Laws is ludicrous at best. The Mentally Ill need to be taken care of!

    1. I agree except for the part about the teachers. As a retired teacher, I can attest to problems in “the system”. Teachers can begin reporting problems seen in kids very early on in school but the system requires multiple intervention strategies, counseling, behavior modification programs, more counseling, more meetings that get nowhere on and on it goes for YEARS as no one in authority to help these kids will step up and do anything. Teachers can only report and keep reporting while someone else has to DO something about it. Very similar problems occur when trying to get a child help for Special Education services or for reporting child abuse, meetings, paperwork, more meetings, more paperwork, more stalling on authorities part until the kids move on to the next grade where it all begins again.

      1. Parents/Guardians should go to jail if he does bad things.
Unless they report him to the Background Check Database for buying guns.
A hurtful teen that is obsessed with guns is THE criteria.

        1. Parents hands are tied. You can’t do anything to your kid such as a spanking (heaven forbid) or they report you and Social Services steps in and takes you to court for child abuse. If your teenager runs away and you know where they are the police will not bring them back home. But here is the good part if your teenager destroys someone property you are responsible for the damages. Go sit in Juvenile Court one day and you will leave so pissed. The kids that the police have had to arrest just get a slap on the wrist and some have been in court numerous times and sit there with a smirk on their face because they know nothing will happen.

      2. And the police can’t do anything until a crime is actually committed and then it is to late!

    2. But then we wouldn’t have these mass shootings so these idiots can create more and more gun laws that have no affect! The only reason the democrats are in an uproar is because they want all our guns so we will be defenseless and be at their mercy and control!

    1. We need to send in the NRA to teach Chicago young men that are black-
ACCURACY. After a while, there will be hardly any shootings.
They will hit their target the First Time.
