Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas warned illegal immigrants on Wednesday not to come to the U.S. “only to be sent back,” as their numbers continue to explode and reach “historic levels” on the southern border.
“Individuals and families should not put their lives at risk by taking the dangerous journey only to be sent back,” he declared in a video posted on Twitter Wednesday.
The admonishment comes just days after Louisiana U.S. District Judge Robert Summerhays temporarily blocked President Joe Biden from ending Title 42, which is former President Donald Trump’s immigration policy that allowed speedy expulsion of illegal immigrants at the border during the pandemic. The order has reportedly been used more than 1.7 million times, according to the New York Post.
“The restrictions at our southwest border have not changed. Single adults and families encountered will continue to be expelled, where appropriate, under Title 42, and those who are unable to establish a legal basis to remain will be removed,” Mayorkas proclaimed in his statement.
“The bottom line is that US borders are not open,” he stated. “Do not come to the border. Do not put your life at risk only to be sent back.”
The United States continues to enforce its immigration laws, and restrictions at our Southwest border have not changed.

President Biden issued the same warning in March 2021 when he said, “I can say quite clearly: Don’t come.” As for the effectiveness of his message, nearly 2 million illegal immigrants crossed into the U.S. last year.
Mayorkas also noted that Border Patrol agents were “managing numbers at historic levels due to large movements of people fleeing violence, corruption, poverty, climate change, and other hardships.”
Then he warned that the number of illegal immigrants at the border could rise even further. Earlier this month, Mayorkas told CNN’s “State of the Union” that the number of apprehensions at the border could rise to 18,000 per day if Title 42 is lifted.
Axios is reporting that as many as 50,000 illegal immigrants are at the border waiting to cross over. That’s double the original estimate by the outlet in March.
“What we do is we prepare and we plan, and we’ve been doing so for months understanding that the Title 42 authority that the CDC holds is not going to be around forever because, quite frankly, we want to conquer the pandemic and put it behind us,” Mayorkas told CNN.

“And numbers could rise further,” Mayorkas asserted. “From confusion over recent court orders and as smugglers continue to peddle misinformation to make a profit: we are prepared.”
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre contends that “the Department of Homeland Security will continue planning for the eventual lifting of Title 42” as the Biden administration appeals the current ruling.

Illegal immigrants are being encouraged by the “catch-and-release” policies under the Biden administration to come to the southern border, contend Republicans and former officials. In April, DHS released 118,000 migrants, compared to 113,000 they removed, according to Fox News.
Despite Title 42 remaining in place, border towns in Arizona and Texas saw a surge in illegal immigrant crossings over the weekend.
In Yuma, AZ, “migrant apprehensions jumped from 1,000 per day in April to 1,285 in a 24-hour period that ended Saturday morning. Over the course of the rest of the day, approximately 1,300 people were apprehended in the town and nearly 1,500 were taken in on Sunday,” according to the New York Post.
Yuma County Supervisor Jonathan Lines claims his county has seen a “more diverse crowd” of migrants “than ever before.”
A large number of the illegal immigrants crossing the border are from Belarus, Russia, China, Nepal, Uzbekistan, and the Republic of Georgia, according to Lines. Not many of them were from Mexico, he claimed.
